After selling my Evga 780 the other week on the forums. I have realised I am still wanting to game.

I have narrowed it down to the newish NVidia 970 gtx but cant decide which model to get. I will only be gaming at 1080p so the 970 would be well suited.

I have the MSI 970 and the EVGA SSC 970 in mind, both have the 0db idle mode which is very important as the PC used as a HTPC in the living room. I don't want any coil whine that would kill the purchase.

Gaming wise I want to run Witcher, GTA V, COD, Diablo, Wolfenstein, Dying Light, Battlefield 4.

Any one on here have either card want to recommend theirs to me.

The G1 Gaming is generally considered to be the best.

But that MSI is at a really good price and still has a nice cooler.

Oh hadn't considered the gigabyte g1 does that have the 0db mode?

If you really wanted it then there is this video -

which shows you how to BIOS flash your card so it has a 0db fan mode, but if you don't want to mess around doing all that/don't want it so much then just keep the stock one or go for a card that already has it implemented as those will have been designed for such a thing

They are all pretty much going to be the same. So take your pick.

My vote is G1. Fastest out the box and has a backplate.

It was a no brainer when I bought mine, as the MSI was having its fan issues and I already had a Gigabyte card.

Measure up if you go G1 its long!

The G1 doesn't have the 0Db mode, but this wasn't a feature I was interested in. The cooler is quite anyway.

Interesting thread, especially considering I plan to buy my own GTX970 within the next month or so. For top contending 970s, I've heard that the top 3 are the Asus Strix, the Gigabyte G1 and the MSI. MSI seems to be the most popular with downsides of no backplate and apparently more likely coil whine. I'm thinking of going for an MSI myself, for the overclock-ability and decent cooling. I'd want to be able to optimise fan curves, even if the Gigabyte card doesn't do zero fan, if I can tweak the rest of the curve I'd be content.

The higher-up models by Zotac are worth a peek as well, apparently top notch quality coil-whine wise, really good coolers and long warranty. The model with triple fans is priced about the same as Gigabyte's G1 Gaming.

If silence at idle is important I think the infinity black is a good shout. It has a zero coil whine guarantee with OcUK if your PSU is at least gold rated. It's not 0db at idle but only one fan runs at idle so pretty much very quiet for htpc use.

I had the G1 970 and it was a great card although mine wasnt a great clocker and didn't like anything over 1450Mhz. It was cool and quiet too. I wouldn't have recommended the extra £30 over the kfa2 infinity black when the G1 was £310 a month or so ago, but now it's on special offer you can't go wrong really.

Thanks for the recommendation I will google the card for a review
