Which AM5 CPU's would you pair with a 7900XT level card?

Pretty self explanatory, like a few suggestions for an AM5 build around a 7900XT, or 9070XT (I know they're not out yet, but it soudns like they're around this kinda tier).

I play at 3440x1400.

When I built my son's PC with a 7900XT I paired it with a 7800X3D. So I would pair it with a 7800X3D or a 9800X3D. But any AM5 CPU will be fine with it, it all comes down to budget and what are you going to use the PC for?

It's for gaming, but I'm only at the speculating stage at the moment, need to get a rough Idea of what I want to buy.
 
If you're going cheap, then the 7600
If you want a proper gaming pc, then the 7800x3d/9800x3d
My personal rig is a 7800x3d/7900xt, and prior to the 7800x3d upgrade, I had a 7600x...so speaking from direct experience.
 
At that resolution even a 7600/9600X will be sufficient for most games so I'd have zero concerns about buying one, but if you do specifically play the type of games that benefit from the X3D's cache, you'll be leaving a decent chunk of performance on the table. You could always get the X3D at some time in the future, when they're no longer so expensive.
 
I know you kind of answered it but depending on what you actually use the PC for has some consideration as for pure gaming it is hard to beat the X3D chips, but they can be a hindrance if you do a lot of productivity or other broader range of tasks where the gaming uplift can be relatively small compared to other CPUs in comparison to the hit to productivity usage outside of gaming.

Personally would recommend against the split 6 core CCD chips as they can have inconsistent performance and despite reasonable averages and being strong in certain areas it hides that they can fall down in other areas sometimes - in some newer games the minimum FPS can be quite poor compared to other chips around them I suspect due to CCD to CCD communications (or hitting the limits without using the other CCD cores).

I'm in a similar situation. I have a Ryzen 7700 with a 4070ti Super at the same res 3440x1440 and this cpu lets the gpu fly.

Unless you are playing really cpu heavy games a 7600 and above should be fine.
 
the 7700 and 9600 are not massively apart on price, but if you not going to use all the cores. The 9600 would out perform the 7700 in games

As things stand now the 9600 slightly outperforms the 7700 in games, but increasingly games have 6 core / 12 thread as the minimum requirement and 8/16 as the recommanded, though a lot of games will still run fine on 6/12 and probably get away with 4/8 for awhile yet I would probably still lean towards an 8 core 16 thread CPU if pairing up with any mid range or faster GPU.

7800X3d is an awesome cpu, your son is lucky his dad knows a bit about cpus
