Which AMD system should I use ?

Hi Guys :)

I'm in a bit of "dilemma" :D I have two systems to choose from for my "new-old-used" build. But I'm not sure which would give the best performance in overall use and gaming.

1) 8GB Kingston DDR2 800MHz, MSI 790XT-G45 AM2+, AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition.

2) 4GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 1600MHz, Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5 AM3+, AMD FX-4300 Black Edition.

I'm going to install it in a Corsair Air 540 and for GFX I have bought a Club 3D R9-270 14'series 2GB Card.

Gaming will be done at 1680x1050 on a 20"TFT :)

Have you bought the 540 case already? If not do yourself a favour and get a cheaper case. This will allow system 2 but with a decent FX8320, or at the very least a 6300.

If it's a straight up choice between systems 1 and 2, go for system 2. But to be honest it's like choosing between syphilis and gonorrhea : I'll take neither thanks.

The Phenom II X6 one.

Why would you choose a rig with half the RAM, and a lesser CPU? The FX4300's only really got IPC on the Thuban (Except cases where the extra instruction sets are utilized) but it's also got a 2 core deficit.

You need to stick the 1090t in the 990 board, buy another 4gb of ddr3 for it and get a sata 6 ssd to finish off after selling all the spare stuff. Will feel really nice and fast then.

I chose the system because of its potential rather than the performance it will give right now. Spend roughly £100 and it will be a decent mid-range system. System 2 has an excellent motherboard and 4gb of quick ram. He'll be hard pushed to tell the difference in games right now with only 4gb, given the rest of the system specs.

Fair enough I guess.

It'd be easy to upgrade it to an FX8320, but I wouldn't be happy at all with 4GB RAM, I was monitoring my RAM usage yesterday playing GTA IV, and system was hitting 5.5GB RAM usage.

I know they aren't top end systems but I don't have the economic means to spend a lot (already bought a new GFX £115) and I was offered the option to get one of these "bundles" fairly cheap around £80.

The was donated to me from a hardware-reviewer as a used "test-case", with a few markings from use.:p

That would probably be ideal, but the offer comes from two different persons, so I can't really "swap" the CPU.
As for spare stuff I haven't gotten anything other than a 550watt PSU and a 1TB harddrive and a win7 Premium disc. That's what I have at the moment. Using a cheap Acer Asprie One now for all my different uses, and it's sluggish :)

That's why I'm asking ;) I'm not really sure which is better. When I look at Anandtech's CPU Bench list in games the FX-4300 comes out on top.

Buy both, keep the 990FX motherboard and DDR3 RAM. Sell FX4130,Phenom II X6 1090T, DDR2 RAM and 790X motherboard. Buy another 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a decent cooler and an FX8320. The Phenom II X6 1090T sells for between £85 to £110 on the famous auction site and the FX4130 for around £40 to £50.

Alternatively,if that is too much effort keep, the Phenom II X6 1090T,990FX motherboard and 4GB of DDR3 and sell the other bits. You might find you essentially get a free upgrade!!

What PSU do you have?

A lot of those are lower is better.
The FX4300's advantage comes from its clock and turbo, you can clock the 1090T on stock volts to probably 3.6GHZ, and 3.8GHZ would be easy as pie to get.

Are these offers free, or how much money do you have to spend all together, we might be able to spec something better.

I can't afford something brand new atm- that's why I mostly buy used to get decent hardware to a fair price. I have £100-112 to spend on ram, motherboard and cpu.

While that sounds good, I can't unfortunately come up with that money for the moment.
I have a Corsair VX550 PSU

But as I understand it, the "general voice" is that the AMD Phenom II X6 1090T and the AM2+ system gives the best performance right now, whereas the AM3+ system give the better upgrade path when being a bit slower now !?

I love my older brother :D

For £110 he gave me:
2x4GB Crucial BallistiX Sport 1600Mhz, AMD FX-8350 and a Gigabyte GA990XA-UD3 motherboard !
I'm sooo thrilled :D
Gotta love 'em family !!!

After selling some stuff and swapping some parts around I ended up with this build !

Corsair Carbide Air 540
Gigabyte 990XA-UD3 Rev3.0 socket AM3+
AMD FX-8350 Vishera 4.0GHz
Cooler Master TX3 Evo CPU cooler
8GB (2x4) Corsair Vengeance Low Profile Black DDR3, 1600MHz PC3-12800, CL9-9-9-24, 1.5v
Gigabyte Radeon R9 280X WindForce 3X OC Rev2.0 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express
Western Digital Green 500GB HDD, 64MB Cache
LG GH24NSB0 Super Multi - DVD±RW (±R DL)/DVD-RAM - 24x/24x/5x
XFX Pro Series Core Edition 750watt 80+ Bronze, 62amp 12v+.

With the exception of the DVD-rom and CPU cooler everything has been bought used/2nd hand !.
I am sooooo pleased with this PC. It's such a HUGHE performance boost coming from AMD Phenom II X4 945 3.0GHz, 4GB DDR2 Ram, 2x HD5770 1GB crossfire ! :D
