Which AMD upgrade?

Sorry for late reply. Thanks for all your help its really appreciated.

I was thinking about a X4 955 and my budget is around the price of that CPU but the general consensus is to unlock and overclock the X3 720 will give this a go.

Will try upping the vcore voltage, is 1.4V what I should be changing to?

I had a look in BIOS and it showed Normal CPU Vcore as 1.325V and I changed "CPU Voltage Control" to 1.4V.

Ran LinX for a few mins and PC shut itself off with no warning or anything, I'm guessing this is overheating?

Most likely overheating

Don't overclock on phenom stock coolers they are crap. tbh I would just unlock the 4th core and wait for bulldozer to arrive next month. Then take another look at yer options as other amd cpus are likely to drop in price more.

Would it be worth me purchasing a new cooler to at least try and run the 4th core stable as it keeps showing errors in LinX on default voltage and changing to 1.4V just shut down.

Could anybody recommended a decent cooler? preferebly without the need to fit a bracket as I don't fancy removing the motherboard.

tbh u will struggle to get a good cooler that don't need a bracket. I would personally wait it out see what happens when bulldozer arrives. eta rumored 15th October.

It would be a lot cheaper getting a cooler like the Gelid instead of the 955, and a better move consider Bulldozer should be out in a month. You need to keep the load temps under 62c.

Guys also remember the Tri-core has better IPC than the Quad core because it shares the L3 across cores, that's why I run mine on 3 instead of 4 cores. I maxed my 720 at 3.9GHz but dropped it back down to 3.5GHz now because it's more than enough to feed my 5850.

I thought this might be the case.

Could you recommend a good CPU cooler for my CPU up to say £35? as I have no clue on what is a good cooler.

Sub $20

I would go for the £20-£30 one used this myself in the past for the price it is a great cooler

Edit: Dont forget to check they fit before buying them

Will definately get a new cooler then. If I have to remove the motherboard to fit the backplate then I will.

I'm considering the Cooler Master 212 Plus?

The Cooler Master 212+ is not a bad cooler at all but a bit expensive for what it is, really.

I've got one in my AMD rig and it's pretty loud if you want to keep things cool when overclocking.

Get the Titan Fenrir Evo if your budget allows for it, £30 is a very good price for it.

Just make sure it will fit in your case. :)
