Which Asus P6T for overclocking?

Hi,

I'm looking to buy an x58 based board for an I7 920. I'll be looking to overlclock the chip, hopefully to 4GHz.

I don't care about things like only having 1 ethernet socket and whether or not it glows in the dark. I care only about the impact of the choice on overclocking. Is the P6T Deluxe going to be any better than the standard P6T?:confused:

These mothers are so expensive, I need to save money wherever I can!:(
 
I was going to start a similar thread till I seen this one. I am looking at the ASUS P6T range mobo's too. I happen to stumble across this one

where I plan to purchase it from its being sold for almost next to nothing, yet it appears to be a brand new motherboard just released by ASUS. Looks like it has plenty of overclocking potential...and I am very tempted to get it. I am going to get more research on it...
 
Looks great for the price! The omissions compared to the others that i've noticed so far; it doesn't seem to support SLI, I can only see Crossfire mentioned on the product page and I'd imagine no SAS controller.
 
Yeah, the board layout doesn't seem to vary much compared to my P6T vanilla so I'd expect those are the differences.

People shouldn't be expecting 4ghz though - the chips vary in quality and some won't go above 3.8.
 
The thing is...even if I can get just 3.8GHz out of it on air I will be happy...I just want to replace my current Intel Q6600, 4GB DDR2 and ASUS P5Q-E in the gaming machine...and thats it...
 
Yeah, 3.8's doable. That's the fastest I can get on mine; but bear in mind I'm not really an OCing expert (that reminds me - need to consult forum gods about achieving 4ghz).

Bear in mind you will need a new cooler too mate; best ones are the Akasa Nero and the Noctua. Had a look at OCUK's pre-overclocked bundles? Great value and peace of mind not having to mess about yourself.

Yes, the coolers were also something I was looking into...those two sound interesting will look into them :) thanks :D
 
I think the P6T Deluxe has 16 phase power and the vanilla has 8 phase power. IIRC 16 phase allows for more stable overclocking which helped with quads but that was a question i asked regarding P45/X48 boards a long time ago so i could be corrected on this point re Core i7.
 
Quick side question, does the basic Asus 6pt (not the deluxe or rampage versions) intel x58 mobo have compatibility with 1600 mhz RAM?

I always assumed so until my friend warned me to check before I spend that bit extra on the higher spec RAM.

Yep 1600mhz ram works on the P6T via XMP profile and with manual O/C. Check the compatibility list for the individual memoey.
 
That does appear to be the same as a P6T without SLi. Unfortunately, until a few people get them, you can't really tell if they are good clockers or not, as 'looking like' a good board and being a good board are somewhat different, even reviews can be misleading as sometimes reviewers get 'special' boards.

It's worth noting that Gigabyte have now enable SLi on all their X58 motherboards, just through a BIOS change, so it may be possible on this one too, although I havbe no idea how ASUS have reduced the feature-set on these.
 
Despite the power phase differences, everything I've heard suggests that your max overclock is about 95% down to the actual CPU. People who've swapped up to "better" boards usually report little or no difference.


3.8GHz is doable - probably but not certainly. I have to run silly voltages through mine (on air with a TRUE) to get it. You might get 4GHz, you might not - but odds are it just down to the CPU. I've had no real issues with the vanilla P6T except that you can't change the Uncore voltage (you can't on any Asus board I believe). But I wish I'd bought the EVGA.
