Which ATI card?

Always been an nvidia user but the grief I've had with my current 460 1GB means I'm switching to ATI.

I'm looking at spending around the £150 mark, I can stretch to a few quid more. At the moment I'm looking at either a 5850, 6850 or 6870.

I play the likes of Just Cause 2, BFBC2, Left 4 Dead 2 and Dragon Age Origins, 24" screen @ 1920 x 1080

What's my best option here?

This one is over budget but have a look at the Sapphire HD 6870 Toxic Edition. Reviews online if you search.

OcUK don't stock it but its available for £187.98 from a certain south coast supplier.

Sure but if you are going all the way to £188 you might as well go up to £200 and grab a XFX 6950 from OcUK and flash it to a HD6970. That would be much faster than any of those cards mentioned.

Confliction with various mobos? Though I thought they had sorted that one out.

This and they haven't. Nvidia are looking into it but have not been able to re-create the issue yet. Obviously there is one though http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=187401

I've gone back to using my 260 but it's just not powerful enough. Luckily the 460 works in my step sons pc so it's avoided going in the bin.

I'm wondering what grief you had - I have a 5870 which although it's not a 6870 is a high-end ATI card. I'm getting a lot of driver grief, and hearing the same from those with 6870 cards. It just fails at AA, and new game performance isn't fixed until 2-3 driver releases after launch.

I've always had an Nvidia card in the past, but at the time I bought my 5870 there wasn't an Nvidia card that could match it. However.. right now, I think you'd have to be fairly bonkers not to get a 560Ti, 570, or even a 580. I'm even thinking about biting the bullet and switching.

I have seen the Asus HD6870 1GB DirectCU for under £160 excluding delivery on special offer before. You can get an HD6950 2GB for around £200 ATM from many retailers and hence I would not pay more than £170 for an HD6870 1GB.

I would probably look at an MSI HD6850 1GB Cyclone for around £140 to £150 as it has a decent factory overclock.

Regarding the AMD cards one of my mates has an HD5770 1GB and another an HD5850 1GB and the cards and the drivers seem fine.

Also, remember that the GTX560 is an evolution of the GTX460 so I would check if it has the same compatibility issues with your motherboard.

Assuming the OP is happy to flash the bios then yes thats a good option if they can go to £200.

Thats very pricey for a HD6870. You can pick up a HD6950 for £190~

Compared to the reference Sapphire HD 6870 that OcUK are selling (£194.99), it is a good price.

I understood the reference cooler on the 6800/6900 series cards was not that good.

Drivers are OK but NV's always fix everything much quicker.
Completely agree about AMD not having optimized drivers until 3-4 releases.
The 580 is overpriced ATM. The 570 and 560 are good tho.
I would get THIS
It's available in the UK for £150 if you look around

-570 and especially 560 imo not worth it with the soc's and 6950's for ~£200, unlocked + or overclocked.

:confused:Op is getting rid of a 460 why does he want another?

Oh yeah. My bad!
The SOC supply is limited and the 6950 is out of budget. I would get the 6950 if possible but my second choice would be a 5850

ok, I had decided on the 1GB 6950 which is on offer this week until I just saw that there's 20% off the 5870.

Which one is better?
