First off let me start by saying I have never had any decent AV kit before so I am posting here looking for advice as a complete novice. I want 7.1 in future, and possibly a 4k tv upgrade in a few years. HDMI standby pass through is essential as I dont see the need to have the kit all on while the kids watch peppa pig :-).

Currently looking at both of these:

Pioneer VSX924 or the Yamaha RX-V577

My google'ing seems to tell me that the pioneer is more feature packed, but does not perhaps have the sound quality.

Am I missing any other options in this price range (max £300)

Will drive Wharfedale Dx1's

Cheers!!

I'm a fan of my Yamaha amp (RX range although I can't remember exact model number)

Short of having them side by side you won't notice much in terms of sound quality in my opinion.

In terms of features make sure you're only paying for stuff you'll actually use. I personally use mine pretty much only as HDMI switch (and amp for speakers obviously) but don't touch any other settings on any of my 3 AVR's.

Pass through is something I've never consider as even if I watch the news the amp will come on and the TV is in permanent mute via the settings.

My only real suggestion would be that no matter what AMP you go with, get an all in one remote to make your life easier and get the WAF (wife acceptance factor).

Highly recommend the Harmony Smart Control range: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18631835

Makes changing inputs and turning on all your devices that much easier and why you might find that passthrough isn't needed as it's not as if you're turning it on manually anyway.
