Go with an amp first, you'll only do damage to your new speakers if you don't. By the sounds of it it's not at its best anyway...
As for the DM602s, my brother has a pair and I like them a lot. Personally I have some Monitor Audio S6s. Don't do what people have suggested here and discount them because 'they've won awards'.
Last and no means least, make sure you demo them. I can't remember the names of all the speakers I tried before buying mine (or when my brother was demoing before his purchase).
