As thread title, seen a few reddit threads but they contain a lot of nonsense. I have an urge to play a BF/CoD type of game but dont enjoy the whole parkour jetpack crap that the last cod I played has.
Which BF game is "the popular one" right now? Seems like the modern ones (3 and 4) are struggling for player count? They are pretty old now..

BF4 and BF1 are the best

BF4 still has a huge player count (probably the most popular title) and you still have to queue to join quite a few servers.

BF3 is mostly dead (probably because it's almost unplayable at 2k and 4k due to interface issues)

Despite the negativity there's still a lot of people in 2042 and in V

Alternatively try Delta Force (free to play on Steam). It's very good rip off of 2042 and scratches the Battlefield itch

Last played BF4 1-2 years ago (defininitely after 2042 came out) and it still seemed plenty active.
There was a mod for BF3 (like the project reality mod for BF2) which I was hoping would take off as I really loved BF3 when it was current.

I haven't played 2042 in a while, but would have assumed the 'portal' mode (classic maps and rulesets all in one place) would have been exactly what people like us wanted.
I spent years trying to find a BF alternative after my Origin account got compromised and EA 'help' were entirely no help :( Wafrace was good fun but quite P2W, I think it's gone even more that route since I played it.

Edit: Had some fun on HLH too and squad/Insurgency seemed cool, although that's a bit more gritty/sim-like than BF.

OH - A BIG one, if you haven't played it - Battlebit remastered - basically BF2/BFBC2/BF3 vibes but with minecraft graphics! Really enjoyed that for the short time I've played it!

Assuming I know nothing about the series( which is correct !), Which one has the best combination of being the most modern and also best for single player campaign

BF3 and 4 are modern combat.
2042 is near future (obvs 17 years ahead)
Only BF3 has a fully fledged campaign (which is quite good), and BF1 (which is WW1) has an excellent campaign made up of short story missions.

Battlefield One has a single-player campaign, it is quite good. But not that long.

Had a few rounds of BF4 and was having a great time but all 3 servers I tried were kicking me after a few minutes with "Kicked by punkbuster" and no further reason

They're all full of cheaters looking at the forums :( I was struggling with choosing a game yesterday, never settled on one.

I play BF1 mostly, such a gritty and immersive game… shooting was a little wonky but it looks and feels great.

This is affecting my enjoyment of a lot of online games. Might make the switch to console and turn cross-play off :(

Try valorant, its like Counter strike, has probably one of the best anti-cheat programs of the lot, not saying there arent any but they arent common.
I have often wondered about trying another multiplayer shooter indeed. Lately, my experience in COD has put me off the genre quite a bit. I wasn't aware that Valorant had a superior anti-cheat so may indeed check it out.

To be honest 2042 is probably your best bet, not that its a great game or anything but as has been said already the other games have so many hackers nowadays.
I loved BF1 but when you get to a point where your pretty good and experienced in the game you realise how many noob tools there are in the game and it just becomes an annoying game then.

Its a sad state of affairs for a BF player, Delta Force which a lot of us had high hopes for is proving incredibly shallow.
Thankfuly we have games liek hell let Loose, Squad,Squad44,Arma Reforger though.

That surperior anti-cheat comes at a cost though. Unlike other games, it doesn't stop and start with the game. It's either:

Run Vanguard (the anti-cheat) 24/7.
Reboot everytime you want to play because you closed Vanguard and it wants to be there from boot.

So your choice is either, invasive or annoying.

Not much of a choice... :(

Currently running to BF5 for my go to 30-40 minute match of fun. So far, still loving it.

I get your point but I have never once been bothered about it running on my system, and if I was then I would just disable it when not playing the game but I've never felt the need to do that.
What is far more annoying is loading up a multiplayer game and having my precious time wasted because of cheaters, it got to the point in a lot of games I used to play (Bf, Counterstrike, PubG) that I would just stop playing as my time was being wasted, PubG was a proper example of this and still is by all accounts, was a brilliant game but one day I just came to the realisation it wasn't worth playing anymore due to the cheater problem, which is a damn shame as I had some of my best gaming moments on PubG.
Riot by all accounts spend a lot of time fighting the cheater problem and go into a lot of depth trying to combat the issue so this is my only multiplayer game at the minute.
