Which bike?

I'm looking at buying a bike for £200 to £300 but I'm a bit unsure as to which type to buy. It'll generally get road/paved trail use but there are some sections of trail that are gravel so I don't think a road bike would be the best idea.

I've spoken to a friend and it seems like I have two choices: either a hybrid bike or a hard-tail mountain bike with possibly two sets of wheels.

I was hoping the knowledgeable people of OcUK could give me their input and possibly some ideas of models to look out for?

I'd either go for a hard tail or a cyclocross. See how much you can get a second hand Specialized Hardrock (the sport-disk version!) for. I'd wager you can get a pretty tidy one for £300 seeing as they're £450 new.
