I`m an avid PC gamer and i`m going to build a new PC( my first build) in the next few months and I read another thread here and I had decided to go with Intel for my new build as I want to have an Nvidia card this time after being a ATI fan for a few years and I found out that Intel is better witH Nvidia cards. But then I remembered that the guy at my local PC shop told me that AMD and ATI are better for gaming.

Is this true? are AMD and ATI combo better than Intel and Nvidia? if its true then what processor should I go for, I5 or I7, if its not true and I should go for the AMD and ATI combo then should i go for an AM3 build or wait until the inevitable AM3+ comes out later this year?

Cost maybe an issue here as I have only about £600-£700 to spend minus the graphics card so maybe that will be a deciding factor but really I dont want cost to decide my build, I just want the best of the best for games.

ATI don't exist anymore, it's only AMD.

The guy was talking crap.
Nvidia and AMD are pretty much at each others throats GPU wise, Nvidia have the best single card solutions, but they're at a premium.

Intel are much better CPU's than AMD at the moment, however that may/may not change when Bulldozer launches if 57-87 days time.

So Panyan you are saying if I want a better value system then go for AMD. I already knew this because I have been with AMD and ATI for years but I guess my original post was a bit bad Im just asking should i go for AM3(with Phenom 2) or AM3+(when it comes out with a bulldozer chip) or I5 or!7 for my new gaming build?

Best processor to build a gaming rig around now is the i5 2500k no question.

Add the best GPU you can afford from either the red or green team. It doesn't matter which.

It's so easy to overclock a 2500K.

It's just a matter of upping the multiplier and perhaps tweaking a few voltages.

4.4-4.5GHz is a pretty easy to achieve overclock.

Just get a reasonable CPU cooler.

When you have a specific motherboard you can soon be guided through this.

OK cool I might buy the parts and read a guide about it if I still don`t think I can do it at least I can pay the local PC shop to do it for me.

Edit: I will read those guides you just posted, thanks.

I`ve read those guides but it seems a bit scary to me still I wonder if just buying a good motherboard would be the way to go and let it auto-overclock the CPU for me.

let me explain,

a nice Phenom II build would cost ~ £160

a nice Sandy Bridge build would cost ~ £280

the machines would both be very good for daily use, the SB would outperform on heavy tasks/gaming, but costs almost twice as much

If you want to go down that route get an MSI board. OC Genie is the best of the auto overclocking tools.

Panyan so if the difference in price is £120 in the two builds and say my budget for a graphics card was an additional £200 would it be more wise to select the AMD build and put the extra £120 pounds towards a better graphics crad, ie: would i get better returns for my money gaming wise having approx a £300 pounds graphics crad and an AMD build, or better returns using I5 and a £200 graphics card?

Subbtna I love the look of that package and at least I dont have to worry about any overclocking.

mate any building/tweaking for the first time is scary....but...you got access to this place now to help you so don't worry about it. Trust your abilities to follow instructions and you'll get your PC working no problem.

Building a PC is a bit like the big green lego square you start with in Lego...your PC's "green square" is the motherboard that you just plug stuff into. Job done.
