Ok so i decided a long time a go that i was going to build a top end amd system for gaming as i dont do encoding, editing, etc but recently with price changes and new products coming out and reading a lot on forums, the line between amd and intel is becoming smaller and i cant decide which build is better, i will be playing the latest games and bearing in mind, on my wage, this system will take a good few months to build, so which do you think is the best.

AMD

Or Intel

cheers buddy :)

You will get opinions from either side of the camps, in reality, you will not see much of a difference (if any) during gaming sessions. I have friends who has top end AMD systems costing over a grand, and friends with top end Intel systems costing the same, there is no seeable difference during gaming.

Personally I'm going with AMD. Not because it's better, but for the simple fact that AMD tend to keep sockets alive for much longer than Intel making future upgrades considerably cheaper. Had you been wanting to use it for other rendering purposes, the Intel would've been a better option. For gaming it makes no difference.

In short, toss a coin. Pick whose marketing you like better, or whose logo you prefer.

PS.

Whichever way you go, the chosen components will make your gaming experience very pleasant.

thank you indeed, i have just started using fruity loops, so i don't know in the near future how much of that i will be doing, and i'm liking the look of cs5 also, i'm a dab hand at photoshop.i quite prefer amd, i dont know why i just always have done. but i do love the maximus III board

I would also go amd but in that rig i would change the motherboard to the cheaper 890gx, then also get a 955 as essentially its a 965 with a lower clock, then you can overclock it, then with the money saved from that i would invest in a half decent cooler, tuniq 120 extreme? And as said above i would opt for a cheaper hd 5850 such as the Asus.

If it's the look of the maximus you like, check out some of the new boards that's coming out with the x6 chip. Looks mean.

I would go for the Intel System (it is simply faster). It is true that intel's sockets don't remain current as long as AMD ones do, but it is the faster platform at the minute (and overclocks further). Anyway, Intel continued to release s775 chips even after nahalem was released - so I wouldn't expect them to completely forget about s1156 as soon as sandy bridge is out.

One thing I would change about the intel spec is the motherboard. Go for this board instead - paying £195 for a s1156 board is madness.

If you really want x16x16 crossfire, please bear in mind that at the minute an i7 920 costs £180 new, and a gigabyte X58A-UD3R board costs £157. So it doesn't cost much more than a Phenom II + 790FX system but has much more performance and overclocking headroom.

and a cs storm scout case, i bought some good stuff, then spent £200 on building my first pc, but didnt want to spend too much incase anything happened, so the Mobo, Cpu, Gfx and memory are basically expendable, they where just to learn how to build.

with what you have said u will be doing. id be inclined to go down the amd route. its been said that i5 1156 and i7 1366 will be phased out next year and as u said cost is a issue it will obviously be cheaper just to upgrade the cpu instead of a mobo/cpu and ram.

tbh for what i do my i7 rig is hugely overkill but i got one just cos i wanted a 4ghz cpu and i wanted the best i could afford. if i had known that 1366 was being phased out next year i would certainly have considered a amd rig

I'm sorry m8, I don't understand your argument. The i7 is MUCH faster in CPU dependent stuff than current AMD kit and in games it is just as fast (because games are limited by GPU not CPU). Hence - you have the faster system now. Plus, in the future the i7 rig won't need an upgrade untill much later than a Phenom II would - as it is faster (clock-for-clock) and much more overclockable.

As for upgrade in the future, yes AM3 will likely be supported by future CPUs past the upcoming crop of X6 Phenom IIs. However, past that there are no guarantees - you would be buying an AMD socket based on what is effectively a bet.

Anyway, Intel have confirmed that non-EE 32nm (Gulftown) based Hex cores will be coming later in the year and do work with existing X58 boards. This means any X58 owner can do a drop-in upgrade and get a theoretical 50% performance boost (only in multi threaded stuff) and the low-power, high overclock characteristics that the Intel 32nm Hex cores seem to show.

Please don't dismiss me an Intel Fanboy - I really want AMD to do well. However, at the minute Intel seem to have sewn up the high-end. I truly hope the X6 will be great, however early benchmarks don't seem promising - I for one will be pouring through the reputable tests (read: Anandtech) as soon as they come out. Anyway, even if X6 doesn't shake the world - I'm sure the upcoming Bulldozer will be worth the wait (however AFAIK there has been no confimation that bulldozer will be compatible with AM3 - if anyone has more info on this please post it).

do you think it would be silly of me to buy everything i needed including a new os and psu with the new finance option (if i can get it) which i never seem to be able to get, i dont know why though. i know i can easily pay it off within one year and i wouldnt have to wait for it piece by piece.

I could be wrong but I've heard that if you keep getting rejected when applying for credit/finance then your 'credit score' gets worse.
The worse the credit score the worse the chance of getting credit gets. i.e. a vicious circle.

i dont understand though, i dont have a credit history, no cards, debts or anything, and i work full time 40+ hours a week, been rejected a couple of times with the old v12 i think it was called, but ocuk have a new finance supplier now, hoping i might be able to get it.

It doesn't matter if you have no debt, etc. If you get a rejection of any credit application it gets recorded on your credit score..

try checking your credit history...

The thing with credit checks is that they want you to have debt - the more debt you are servicing - the better you do. In the eyes of a credit company, the worst person in the world is the hard working guy with no mortgage and pays all his bills on time.

Yay Capitalism !!
