Which cab/head?

I'm looking into buying a cab 100W + for <£200.

Ashdown

I've been looking at this Ashdown as I've had a play through a couple before and really liked them. I'm just not sure what model they were, so the ones I played through could have been much much more and this could be naff(;)).

One brand which I'd like to steer clear of is Beringer for obvious reasons. My friend has a 100W Beringer cab which he paid £100 for. He has a Randall head going through it which is harsh as it sounds pretty bad. :(

Oh yeah, I should have mentioned this before. I play a '78 Strat and have no head yet so it doesn't need to match. I play lots of stuff from blues to metal etc. So I'd like a versatile bit of kit.

Also as I don't have a head, if someone could recommend me one then that would be cool. :) Looking, again, for 100W+ but this time it would be more like <£300.

Any advice is really appriciated. :)

Cheers,
Naffa

Not the worst cab ever... Not the best either. I think that one got the Ashdown designed speakers, which aren't particularily good.

I'd look for used, at £200. That's how much I sold my Marshall 1960AV- like a normal 1960 4x12 but with Celestion Vintage 30s, massively better than the regular ones and much more versatile, same speakers as you find in the Mesa Rec cabs... Or £210 gets you a Marshall 1922 2x12 from GAK?

The cabs from the Trace Elliot Speed Twin range are pretty well made, they look good too and they're cheap :) But don't confuse with the ones with the metal grille on the front, they're undersize and not very good.

You're not going to either a decent cab or head for £200, even second hand. Why do you even need a cab/head? You'd be best saving up for a second hand combo to be honest.

Disagree with that, I've seen any number of Marshall 1960 4x12s at around the £200 mark used and in fair condition, not the best cab in the world but they work. Don't confuse them with the MG and AVT cabs though...

Though I agree that combos make more sense.

Well I have a combo... Which I gig out with. I only want a stack as it's something I don't have and would like to have. :p

And when I said <£200, I mean <£200 for the cab and <£300 for the head separately.

I bought a 2nd hand Marshall 1960A 4x12 3 years ago in mint condish, for £200.

Look around and you will find them :)

Headwise, depends on what your playing. But I had a fiddle with a 100w 'Kustom' head the other day in Regent Guitars and I must admit that it sounded amazing :)

Ah you might be able to get something with that then. Although buying one for a sake of buying one is a bit pointless, and I'm sure you'll regret it!

You'll probably be able to get a s/hand Marshall TSL head off that popular auction site for £300. I've seen TSL half stacks going for around £500 before.

Oh aye... Many decent combos will drive a half stack without difficulty, as long as you buy with a little care as far as impedences etc go... So if you like your combo, there's a good chance you could use more of your budget on a better cab and just use the combo to drive it.

Get yourself some 3/4 inch Birch ply... a couple of Celestion Classic lead 80s and a couple of the more traditional voiced celestions from say http://www.watfordvalves.com/home.asp and build yourself two 2 x12 cabs

1..Its a lot easier getting 2 of them in a car boot or back seat than a single 4 x12

2..You can use as many as appropriate to where you are playing

3 Two of the speakers wont be just flapping your trousers and little else..

4 ..You get a choice of either or tones and and the ability to mix..

5..There is nothing quite like the smug feeling of someone saying .."hey that sounds cool where did you get it from" and being able to casually reply..."Oh just summat i knocked up myself with a little help" :D

Before I settled on my Mode Four head/cab I looked around for a second hand 1960 cab, a good place to keep an eye on is www.classifieds.co.uk (and also http://uk.freeads.net). I was in contact with a guy who was selling a 1960A cab with one faulty speaker for £150, a replacement Celestion is <£50 so it was a definite potential.. then I plumped for a brand new MF and haven't looked back :p

Merchant City Music let me go nuts with a Mode 4 full tower a while back... Absolutely phenomenal  I'm fairly rubbish, but with that sort of insipration you tend to play to your limits :) But my lil' 60 amp vox will have to do for now, since it doesn't kill passersby.
