Hi all,
i would appreciate some help in choosing my next card, yup its that time again;)
I haave been reading that it will be hard at the moment to beat the radeon gtx 760, true?
Also there are quite a few versions around. One mag highly reccomends the msi gtx 760 2mb, but even then there are several versions.
I currently have i5 at 3.3 stock, 8 gig ram, and a Gigabyte radeon gtx 480
which has performed faultlessly for 18 months.
Im not really any good or even that interested in overclocking , so thats not an issue, just to get the best card for the money with no issues.
Got good advice last time re the gigabyte gtx 480 so im back for more advice please.

Barry

For £200 there are really only two cards to consider, the Amd Radeon 7950 or the Nvidia GTX 670\760 (two cards but really the same). Personally I would recommend the Radeon 7950 which has a bit more future proofing due to having 3Gb vram and a 384bit memory bus against the Nvidia cards 2Gb vram on a 256bit bus. This may not matter to you depending on your setup in which case there is very little between these cards and any of them will suffice. I notice you seem to mix the card manufacturers names up in your post (Radeon GTX mmm......) unforgivable on this forum, you are banished forever to console land. :D

A little harsh :D maybe a spell in the naughty corner

I'm presuming you use a 1080 monitor

As you don't fancy overclocking, 1 of these would see you right

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus GeForce GTX 670 DirectCU II OC Gamer 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card **FREE SHIPPING** £199.99
1 x MSI GeForce GTX 670 OC Twin Frozr Power Edition 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £197.99
Total : £397.98 (includes shipping : FREE).

But either of these if you do fancy having a go

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI HD 7950 Twin Frozr III Boost Edition 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card **NEW REVISION** with FREE GAMES £199.99
1 x HIS HD 7950 IceQ BOOST 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (H795QC3G2M) £189.95
Total : £402.84 (includes shipping : £10.75).

7950's and 670's offer virtually identical performance. 7950's may perform slightly better once both cards have been overclocked, but there is not much in it. I chose the 7950 because it has 50% more VRAM and more overclocking potential, but other will choose the 670 because it supports Physx and uses slightly less power. Both offer great bang, but for me the HIS ICEQ 7950 seems the best deal on OcUK at the moment.

If I had gone for a 670 it would have been the ASUS DirectCU II 4GB. It has the best cooler of any 670, and the 4GB version is only a tenner more than the 2GB. Even if you never use more than 2GB, the 4GB version will retain that extra tenner in resale value.

Thank you everyone for your helpful and mostly polite replies, lets hope mr rolypoly never makes a mistake in his scottish life. I would hate to see him belittled like he has tried to do to me. But im a nice guy so i forgive you.
If I decided to give the overclocking a go later, is this done with software that comes with the various cards?

Thanks again for the quick response everyone.

Barry

On the AMD cards the driver software lets you overclock by just moving a slider. With Nvidia you can use MSI Afterburner to do the same.

I'd go for the 7950 myself at these prices. The 670 is an excellent card too, but the lower spec memory makes it less attractive to me (I've got the Asus DCII 670).

Just having a giggle Barry, no offence meant, coming on a bit strong there though. :(

I am so mixed up on this, always used Nvidia, scared to switch but isit worth it...could now be the time to try something new? the 670 is a beast compared to my GTS 450 1GB :D but the 7950 has that 3GB vram and hopefully very decent coolers too?.Was looking at the asus 2GB 670 (although the 4GB model would probably be a better buy £ to flash ratio it has shown under performance compared to its 2GB counter-part due to not really being able to use the 4GB fully)

Now i nam feeling a bit confused too.
Several of you have metioned there are new cards imminent, so will this drop the price of most cards? and if i wait a little while, would there be a better deal o the cards reccomended or even a better one for the same price. This always seems to be a dilema,

By the way Rolypoly man, i was only being sarcy back, nothing personal or nasty meant by my reply. Hope youaccept my apology offered hear?

Im a total green ass when it comes to these things.
I tried overclocking my current gigabyte gtx 480 with afterburner, but didnt seem to want to play ball.
I play war thunder/shogun 2, will want to play rome 2 (im a total war series addict) bf series etc.when i have the afterburner monitor running my gpu seems to be maxed quiet a lot while playing war thunder at average settings, although not running hot .
Condused and ignorant.

No reason to worry about switching. I go back and forth depending on the price/performance. The card manufacturers use the same coolers for both. There's always the 14 day return period if for some reason you don't like it (but you will :))

Only die hard fan boys wont switch like most i want the best for my money is any side does better im not adverse to jumping the fence lol
