Hey guys. I'm currently contemplating which setup is best for gaming. Currently I'm using an HD 6770 on an M5A78L-M LX Mobo with a 960t cpu.

I've been leaning towards either an nvidia 560ti or an HD 6950 and getting rid of the 6770 but for the same price nearly I could change the Mobo to an Asus M5A97 pro and get another 6770 and put em in xfire.

Any thoughts guys

TIA

I'd go single card set up if I were in your position and get a nvidia GTX 480. It runs loudly but performance/£ is the best in your price range.

If you're looking at the 6950's wait until the 7850's are released shortly. They'll either plummet in price or the 7850's may themselves be in your price range.

Hi there,

I would strongly recommend going for a single faster card over two HD 6770s in crossfire. If you can wait until Monday the HD 7850 2GB will be out - which offers some really nice performance, while running cool and quiet. Here is a review. When it arrives it is expected to cost ~£200.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Is there any special requirements for this newer card ie min power needed etc as I'm using a 650w CM bronze that came with my CM 690 II case

That PSU should be fine for pretty much any single GPU card, the GTX 480 may even be OK.

The HD 7850 is actually rather low power (150W max) so will have absolutely no problems running with that PSU.

Also looking at that review, my resolution is always at 1920 x 1200 as attached to my tv so is that going to affect the performance showing that the 580 was better

Having a second monitor (or TV) attached hardly affects your performance at all - so long as you aren't running anything 3D-intensive on it.

Ah, so you will be gaming at 1920x1080?

In that case you will pretty much need to extrapolate from the 1200p and 1050p results (or find a different review that does 1080p, like this one).

To be clear, the HD 7870 and GTX 580 are better/faster cards, but they cost £275 and £300 respectively. In contrast the HD 7850 is expected to be around £200 when it launches.

The HD 7850 also offers 2GB of Video memory, which should be useful if you are doing 3D CAD.

Well it outdoes the 6950 which what was aiming at on my res so it looks like the winner. Don't really like going overboard on a single item for the price of the 7870 (plus the missus wouldn't like it lol)

Ok cool. Does it really matter which brand is purchased? Say for instance if I bought the Asus version would it perform slightly better for being on an Asus board?

For the differences between GPU manufacturers, it really all depends on what clockspeeds and cooler the individual manufacturers use on their cards. From launch day we should be seeing different manufacturers using their own cooling systems (most of which have been seen on previous cards) and non-stock clockspeeds. It is also worth taking into account the warranty length and RMA reputation/process of the manufacturer you buy the card from.

As for ASUS card with an ASUS board - there is no performance benefits like that. A sapphire card with the same frequencies as the ASUS card will perform identically on an ASUS board - there is no reason to match the manufacturer of card and board.

It does vary between implementations, but if I had to pick a card manufacturer to go for it would be Gigabyte. They have really nice quality, effective and quiet coolers - plus they offer a 3 year and it's based in the UK.

The ASUS and MSI coolers are also rather nice, but AFAIK the RMA services aren't up to the level of Gigabyte.

When the manufacturer specific cards are released on launch day we should see a wave of reviews comparing the different versions.

The reference cards are fairly similar but the direct CU II cards are good as well as the Gigabyte Windforce cards but you pay a premium for these.

7850 is a good £200 card to get based on the reviews
I've read.
