hey guys and galls,
i was thinking about buying 2 msi R9 290x lightning for £239 each this week as they are on offer, but just been through the forums here and found out that people are having problems with them blackscreening. i was toying with the idea of going nvidea as i have always uded amd cards for donkeys years.
what do you think about these 2 cards ?. GALAX GeForce GTX 980 SOC Gamer and the Inno3D GeForce GTX 980 "Herculez X3 Ultra" . at the moment i am running a gigabyte windforce R9 280x.
i know the inno 3d is £399 and the galax is £419, do you think these are better than getting a R9 290x ? i know the 290x will run hotter but really need some help guys please as i want to order some goods pretty soon.
thankyou in advance for any replys

A 970 is nearly as fast and costs considerably less. That's why.

As nearly as fast yea but not quite as a MSI 290x lightning and with each lightning costing £239 how is a 970 considerable cheaper? The 290x lightning is cheaper.

290x Lightning get my vote!

ohh yea forgot to mention 4 free games with the 290X lightnings too so even better value!

was kinda in same boat, 970 or lightning 290 pre order 19th.
read some reviews on the lightning, all gave great reviews for the card, bar sound, saying could always be heard, so ruled that out, now changed mind and want w/c 970.

I was comparing it to a 980. :p :D

£240 is a darn good price for a 290X Lightning, though. Got me thinking about one now.

yes was more interested in the lightning, in fact i was going to buy 2 of them. but today on these forums i found that post about the blackscreening and nobody knows why. i would love to get these but am just a bit wary. i have seen quite a few reviews about the lightning and by all accounts it is supposed to be 1 of the fastest if not the fastest 290's around.
in terms of raw performance what would be the fastest or best i should say ??.
i need to make a decision and quick befoe i change my mind about upgrading. 980/ R9290x/ 978 which, i know the price is great for the lightning hmmmmm. i am running a 120hz monitor at the moment and was thinking about 1440 soon as well.

I am thinking of getting one just to compare with the current 290x's i have. The lightnings sport some fantastic Sammy memory and i believe it also allows separate voltage control for GPU and memory as well as separate temp monitoring for them. These features are not so important for gaming but for an overclocker they are dreamy!

Out of the box i expect it to be no faster than any other aftermarket 290x until you start clocking.

does anybody know when these will be in stock because they are pre-order??? just still worried about blackscreening issues

I haven't seen many users affected by black screen issues. I expect the vast majority of the cards run perfectly fine and some users experience incompatibility problems with old bios or sketchy driver installs or that they are one of the small few that actually get a faulty card.

My experience since the release of the 290x has been smooth even after i put it through considerable overclocking abuse and some mining abuse.
