which certification after MCDST and A+?

vmware, citrix, windows 2008 (70-647, 70-646), checkpoint, linux certs, learn unix. get those they will go a long way.

i hate cisco certs, rip off and everything is backwards and cisco are on the way out of the market to be honest.

I have seen loads of job ad asking for experience with citrix, they use checkpoint where I work at the mo

Not true, there are several people I know who are MCSE and are working in 1st line.

If you are MCSE, it's doesn't mean jack unless you can think outside the box

Then there is something seriously wrong - having looked it up there's 5,604 people World wide who are MCSE's say a tenth of them work in the UK (probably optomistic but you never know) that's 560 people - so out of 560 people to have them working on a help desk just doesn't fit. Maybe you're thinking of MCDST's - that I could understand.

Agreed experience is the best but you need qualfications and experience to move on - that way you can prove to new employers that you can do the job and it's only a good thing when it comes to salary negotions that if you're qualified.

There are way more than that, hell there are around 2000 people who have the SCCM MCITP and that's a really unpopular one!

5604 MCSE's world wide? That seems awfully low.

It is, there are way more than that!

That number of 5604 is from 2004 just after the cert came out, maybe look at the 2000 MCSE numbers on that list for a better indication. Although I'm willing to bet the number of 2003 MCSEs is quite a bit higher than even that
