I was looking into that very question myself recently. I'd suggest taking a quick look at some of these search results, perhaps starting with http://www.communicopia.net/blog/joomla-versus-drupal, and then weigh up their relative strengths and weaknesses against your requirements.

joomla is horrible.

The backend is clunky and horrid and developing templates is a nightmare

i reckon one of the simplest solutions is just to code it yourself with php and mysql...

the off the shelf cms systems always seem massive overkill to me...

Have you tried modx? That is more an application framework than a complete cms, in that you add the snippets and modules that you need.
