Which Combat Unit Is the Best...

Pure speculation, but from what material there is about, i'd say the SAS are arguably the best trained, but the Israeli's and Russian's probably have more experience due to being "busy".

The best unit depends on the mission, terrain and support which is needed. For example, if you are going through very cold tundra then the Norwegian FSK specialise in that type of terrain. If it's a naval insert then the Yanks train very hard at that type of scenario. They all have their strengths and weaknesses.

Don't overlook the Royal Marines. While not classed as 'Special Forces' they are incredibly specialised in artic warfare, while the SBS are as trained and capable as any in naval inserts. During the Falklands the SBS landed on the islands from a submarine IIRC.

Don't think GROM have been mentioned yet, they are trained using methods from a lot of the forces already mentioned...

They look pretty badass too :p

Although I'd still like to think the SAS were the best :)

Don't get me wrong, they all train for everything to different extents. Some are very capable, but we're only making a small distinction to be the 'best'.

SBS, would say SAS normally, but apparently when going for the selection process, the SBS selection does a lot more than the SAS. I think it was mentioned in a Duncan Falconer book.

Plus some of the stuff they have to do in the sea is total maddness.

That's right, because the SAS spend all their time in Hereford tucked up with tea and biscuits

I just meant the Israeli's have been in continuous, sustained conflict with insurgents for as long as I can remember, as have the Russians.

However, upon reflection the SAS have been continuously involved in their own operations in different theatres, so I do retract what I said.

You only have to watch 'The Rock' to know a singular ex-SAS OAP can outsmart a bunch of American Special Forces, who in turn out smarted a team of Navy Seals!!

I'd have to go with Al Qaeda. Their leadership has evaded capture for the past number of decades, despite being hunted by virtually every country in the world. They have paralysed their opponents through terror tactics on numerous occasions. If you counted the sum of the damage they have wrought, it would be billions upon billions. They are currently believed to be present and highly active in Afghanistan, where Coalition forces are currently being defeated (admittedly, that's not due solely to the skill of the opponents, but still).

Don't have to like them, but you have to respect them.
