Which component are you inclined to save money on?

yea, thats kinda bad haha.

but saying that, Ive never had one blow up and dont know anyone who has! Just see the odd story on the forums... think its a small chance but a big risk if it does go haha

For me until recently it was the case. I'm starting this thread after a remarkably difficult build in a £24 gigabyte case, and am no longer so inclined to save money there.

So, what do you tend to save money on/under specify?

Nothing. I get the best of everything when I'm buying. I don't necessarily go for the fastest/most expensive components, I just do a lot of research on the reliability of each component I'm buying :)

Basically if you skimp on something then expect problems.

I have bought cheap/unknown/unbranded hardware before and have had nothing but problems. Never again. It's all about the research IMO :)

I'd rather wait until I can afford a quality componenet rather than building a sub par rig!

Absolutely. You'll only regret it if you do. Hell, i'm still on an E6750, but since I can't afford a decent CPU I haven't splashed on any potential replacements, even though a few cheap ones have tempted. Just not worth it in the end. I deeply regret trying to save money on my GFX a few years ago and buying a G80 8800GTS 320mb instead of the GTX. I'd probably still have the GTX today if I did.

I tend to skimp on the most "modular" parts - things that can be upgraded seperately.

Case I go for the cheapest I can bear
Hard drives, mine was an old one i had lying around - can easily add more
Graphics card, partly because I play old games and partly because I can pass this 8800 off to my 'rents PC for my brother
RAM because it's dirt cheap
Monitor because I can't tell the difference between my £95 22" and these £250 jobbies... or at least, I can't tell enough for a 150% premium.
Mouse/keyboard/speakers because they all do the same job. I got the three for £25 and they do what I need

I put money into the mobo/cpu because it's as expensive to upgrade regularly, PSU (although I would've preferred the 600W, had to get the 500w) because I want to feel secure that it wont blow, CPU cooler and fans to keep it all cool (cool = long life + extra performance), and things to keep the cables out of the way because I like it relatively tidy
