Bit of a story to this one, I'll try to make it as short as possible.

System:
2.6GHz P4
Generic motherboard 648FX-A
2GB PC3200
Generic 400W PSU
Old card 9800pro flashed to XT
New card x800GTO
Windows XP

About 3 months ago, it appeared that my video card was acting up, after a little while (10-20 mins of use) the screen would blink to black for a split second, this would happen a few times until it would go black constantly and the monitor would go into standby. Rebooting the PC would occasionally bring it back but more than likely it wouldn't come out of black screen.

To me, this showed there was no signal out of the graphics card and it could possibly be heat related.

I bought a new graphics card but it's still having the same problem. Thinking it may be the power supply (400W), I borrowed the neighbour's one (400W as well) and it still happens.

This makes me think that it is neither the power supply or the card, so what could it be ??

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Monitor :)

Seems similar to what my old monitor did just before it died. Would turn black and go on standby more and more until it would only come on for a second then go straight off again.

Interesting, the monitor is a Dell 2405FPW. i might try running my laptop through it for a while and see if does the same thing.

[EDIT]

Just to add, when the screen blanks out, the monitor light stays on green throughout, only after prolonged blank screen does it go into standby.

Mine would go blank then about 10 secs later go on standby. Have you tried using a different input? Could be a cable issue I spose.

To bring this to a close, it was the DVI cable. Annoying as it had taken me ages to work out what was going on.
