Which Console, Argh!

Thanks :)

Would your view change dramatically If you didnt own a TV capable of 1080p and buying a PS3?

Im in that situation aswell, I have a HDTV but not one capable of 1080p, nor do I buy lots of DVD's so investment in a blu-ray is not too my interest, and Im sure sooner or later they will be cheap as chips, like todays DVD players, although dont get me wrong, a very good investment for someone who does buy lots of dvd's.

I have still not decided :p I wont be buying for another 2 weeks, so hopefully there will be some offical news on the "Elites" release, not that the HDMI port will make great difference

No, my Samsung is 1080i and is perfectly fine, it still looks better graphically than the 360 in most games IMO.

My Samsung TV looked crap at 1080i with blu-ray.

Then after the 1.8 update the PS3 downscales beautifley to 720p.

the 360 can now do 1080p since the updates, cant see much difference myself though and my tv can display it. on the dvd side of things, the 360 does upscale dvd playback so it looks better than through scart but you can get the hddvd add on for £100 or less. i think in total the two even out, especially if you are interested in hd/br. if you are not bothered with hd/br then you can save a lot af money but when it comes down to it, its your choice!

True. But then again, I bought the PS3 for games and that's one thing I can't do. If I wanted a blu-ray player I'd have bought a seperate one.

Indeed, the arguement that it is good value because of Blu-Ray is flawed. We are talking about a GAMES machine here.
I would buy neither right now. The PS3 has a lack of games and is way way way too expensive. The 360 has reliability issues that i just can't accept.

As much as anyone says the 360 will win the HD battle, I can really see PS3 sales overtaking 360 sales by Christmas 08 if this reliability issue is not sorted out. It is a shame because the 360 is a great machine. It is at a good price point for what you currently get and has some amazing games, however, MS need to learn that they can not release such an unreliable product and get away with it. Sony need to learn that they can't force Blu-Ray in to the market in a £425 games console!
By that time the PS3 will have a much better catalogue of games than it does now and it will be cheaper to boot. Even if the 360 is £150 for a premium by then it would not be worth the risk to me.

When MS release the Elite Sony will drop the price of the PS3 and make it into somewhat of a bargain in comparison and mess on Microsofts party. At £425 it is too expensive but if it's only to be about £50 ~ £75 more than a Elite (elite yeah right) at the end of the day, I know which one I'm getting.

yeah that post makes it sound like the elite is replacing the other two, its simply another option for those of us who don't want to pay for features we dont use.

Don't forget the Blu-Ray player in the PS3 is not just about playing HD movies, it also gives publishers the oppertunity to expand the content in games without looking at mutiple disks.

Not relevant now, but could be in the future. Take for instance Stranglehold, with the PS3 version there will be the Hardboiled film on the disk along with the game.

If this is successfull, I could see other publishers offering addtional content on the disks to make it more attractive.

Of course I realise that there are other options, I'm about to get my fifth repaired console back. We are comparing the PS3 here are we not? Comparing it to the cheapest 360 is not a comparison at all. The Elite is being released for what? To give the gamer good value for money or to compete with the PS3? (Elite officially confirmed 2 days before PS3 release) It's obvious what I'm saying in this thread (and you know it) and that is the Elite is to combat PS3, instead of fixing the 360 problems all they care about is making more money and beating Sony.

I remember when 128 meg raphics cards came out and everyone was saying 'waste of time and money, they can never utilise it!' And now look at the 512 cards round using every bit available. Sony will use that space they get on BluRay discs as time goes by and things can only get better. The 360 has been out almost what two years? The PS3 three months, wait another years and see it starts to churn out.

And I've seen far more impressive stuff in the XBox 360's first 7 months than the PS3's. Hell, even the launch games smashed the PS3 to pieces both in terms of gameplay and graphics.

This thread once again decays into 'buy a PS3 not because it's good but because the xbox 360 breaks'. Once again I see the PS3 owners relying on the weaknesses of other formats rather than the strengths of their own.

That's a matter of oppinion. Personally I thought both consoles had crap launch titles, the PS3 comes off worse due to the majority of the launch titles already being available on the 360, and many of them being cheaper than their original retail price.

IMO there was very little of any quality on the 360 until September '06. I hope that by September this year I will be impressed by what's available for the PS3, but we'll have to wait and see....

March-April 2006 had a motherload of releases, I would say that was certainly the start of things.

So PGR3, Call of Duty 2, saints row, dead rising, oblivion, burnout revenge, fight night, DOA 4

none of those appealed to you as quality titles?

Serious question but have sony managed to reduce the manufaturing costs on the ps3 yet?

Surely if they are still making a loss on the console a drop in price would be near impossible given their recent financial reports (losses).

For the op, my personal preference would be the 360. I am not saying this as I have one but because its the only console that has any games that appeal to me and lets face it a games console is bought to primarily play games on hence its name.

That is a matter of opinion, nothing more.

I don't have a PS3 so I'm not a owner. It's not buy a PS3 'just' becuase the 360 breaks, don't be so pedantic.
