Which console for the kids for Christmas - Wii or Kinect?

I'm amazed anyone is there right mind is suggesting either Kinect or Move to the OP :(

Both could just as well end up as dust collector's this time next year especially as both Sony & MS are already looking at more hardcore titles for each system.

Also OP any additional cost for the extra controller for the Wii can be offset with the fact that your can get games for £10 pre-owned.

It really is a no-brainer....

Agreed. People were raving about the Wii, how great it was for the family, for parties, for kids for Months after the release. I think it was a good 6 months before people started to realise most games were samey/rubbish/not hardcore enough.

If you had asked people on this forum whether a Wii was worth getting for kids 3 weeks after it's release there would have been resounding shouts of Yes.

I don't know how they can say Kinect won't be gathering the same dust after a mere 3 weeks on general sale?

Not a big fan of any of the 3 motion console things to be honest, but the Wii would be cheapest, have the largest library of games, cheapest games and most titles coming out for it, by a long shot. Plus more games on the Wii are designed and marketted towards kids.

I'll go with the Wii as well. I have a few young nieces who have had one for a few years. I can't imagine they'd have taken to Kinect like they have done with the Wii.

Wii personally. You'd just end up with a lot more than if you bought kinect - massive back library already there for pretty much same price as kinect. Sure, kinect is all new and shiny, but like previous posters have said, wii syndrome was BUZZING around release and for a load of months after.

I predict the same will happen for kinect. Probably faster. While Kinect is miles better than tech such as the eye toy, the fact is, to your high street punter, while they'd love it, they have already previously seen technology like it, albeit far less advanced. Wii hadn't realy been done on a mass retail scale before, so that was a genuine, never seen this before moment for most people.

The fact that it is a peripheral, instead of a core console component, means that game droughts will probably hit harder and faster. Kinect sports and it's ilk will tire faster than their ancestors, purely because they dont bring ground breaking new ways to play - it's wii tennis, for example, they've just removed the wii mote and made it more 1:1-ey.

The wii may get broing eventually, but you have several years of backlog to work through with yer kids.

At the risk of appearing very indecisive, I've swung back towards the Wii - games, price, VFM. I noticed today that lots of online retailers are sold out of the ltd ed red one which I wanted, so gonna try to pick that up tomorrow after work at the local toy chain.

Kinect, no controllers needed, less mess for you to clean up after.

It allows for the family to play together easier, and two of you can stand side by side in some games... New tech but it will soon flourish with a whole host of games, i personaly recommend the fitness game it actualy works and keeping your kids active same time.

It has a learning curve and you need at least 6ft of room from tv to where you will be standing.

but a wii will do the job too.

depends if u want a bit of a go too ;)

The Wii imo.

Kinect has not got that many titles out at the moment and it's basically going to end up like the Wii with a shed load of shovelware.

I've recommended the Wii mainly because it does what it does very well. My family are addicted to These new Dance games on the Wii, I'm hopefully getting Donkey Kong for christmas and it's very good for party games.

It has a larger library of games for you to choose from (and their is a large variety of gems if you look hard enough) and most of the Wii games work out cheaper.

Dance Central on Kinect puts all the dance games on the Wii to shame.

The full body capture adds so much more depth to the game, you actually have to make sure you do the right moves with every part of your body, including your legs, rather than the 'wave the wiimote in the general right direction' of dance games on the Wii.

The freestyle sections in Dance Central are hilarious too, it video records you doing the freestyle section then plays it back to you in high speed, cue loads of idiot laugher from everybody in the room :D

Eventually went for the 25th anniv red Wii as I thought it was best suited to my kids. Paid £165 for it and got an extra Wii Motion plus for £29.99 and DK Returns for £29.99 using vouchers that came with it.

Do I need the extra nunchuck and docking station as well? Any particular ones that are recommended?

Cheers.
