Any IT professionals out there?

I've somehow fallen into an IT Managers roll. I say recently, I've been doing it since about August of last year. I've been working in IT for about 6/7 years so it's not been that much of a shock to the system but now it's course time.

I did the Comptia A+ stuff years ago just to bulk up my CV a bit but now they're willing to pay for more courses so I need to pick one which I think will be the most beneficial.

I'm leaning towards the Comptia N+ course and then maybe do some Microsoft ones. I was tempted to get a Cisco certificate but we don't have much Cisco stuff beyond a few switches and I can get by on PuTTY well enough.

What would you guys do in my situation?

I'd do one relevant to your day to day role.

Do you still have technical work to do day to day and then the additional responsibility of managing a team? Are you just managing a team/budget/department etc.. now?

Presumably it would be worth making sure you're at least familiar with a lot of what your team does if you aren't already so I guess technical courses relevant to what they do could be relevant to you. Perhaps project management course might also be useful (if relevant?) or indeed something like ITIL (again if relevant?) - is there much project management ion your role? Is there much support work involved in it etc..?

Do you mostly use Microsoft products in your job?

As dowie mentions, it really depends on your what your role involves. An IT Manager in a Primary school is a world apart from an IT Manager in a FTSE 100 company.

ITIL for IT Services, Prince2 for Project Management, TOGAF for Enterprise Architecture, CISM/CISSP for Security. I'd focus less on a technology and more on the business requirements & impact, but it really does depend on what your role requires.

N+ won't really do a huge amount of an IT Managers CV.

I say manager, I am just now the sole person responsible for IT in the company (smallest place I've worked. About 70 or so people)

Mostly Microsoft products. I do think the Microsoft course would look better but I figured I should wait until the new version of Windows Server was released.

I'll have a look into those courses, Khrall, thank you

In that case I also suggest doing ITIL or Agile Project Management as they are more focus towards IT than Prince 2.

As for the Microsoft side, it be another 18 months before any Server 2019 exams are released so you can go for Server 2016 if you want to do a cert now.
