Which cpu cooler?

Nice, setter. :)

I've ordered the Shinobi today. Can't wait. It's like Christmas has come early. :D :cool:

Your cpu cooler was recommended in another thread, and is currently one of the ones that I'm eyeing up.

Thanks. :)

When choosing a case this time, I wanted to make sure I had plenty of room to last me at least another build (fed up with cramped mid tower cases). :)

I think the cooler looks nice in your pics, setter. Nothing about the appearance of the cooler puts me off. :)

I also had a look at Lian Li. I remember seeing their Super Armour Tower, or whatever it was called. Really liked that but pretty expensive.

Your builds look very tidy actually. I've never really had a tidy rig, but that will change with this case since I will have something I haven't experienced before. I think they call it 'room', lol. :)

Well, I'm going to be gentle with her. :cool:

At first, it'll just be at stock so I can see if there's any difference between that and my Q6600 @ 3.4. Then, I'll crank it up to 3.6 and see how it goes from there. I assume that once I go beyond 3.6, I'll have to adjust the ram in the bios?

It may be my imagination, but since going from 4 to 8gb of ram, things do seem...well, a bit swifter; a fairly subtle difference, but I think I can see a change. Almost wished I'd gone for more of it when it was on offer. :D

I've received my cpu and mobo. Do I need to purchase the paste separately to apply the stock cooler, or should it have come with it?

Do I have to do anything with the 'sticker' like paste on the underneath of the cooler? It looks like you might have a layer to peel off. I can't see anything in the manuals that mentions this, though.

Thanks, RJC. That's exactly it, although my paste is slightly off center, though I don't think that will matter. Cheers. :)

Done. That was a piece of cake in the end, and there was me being a little apprehensive. :)

Ok, is this healthy?

Just running at stock with stock cooler atm, which I presume is 3.4, and when needed the turbo auto cuts in at 3.8?

Coretemp reads (a few mins after about an hour of CS:S) :

0 = 36
1 = 37
2= 30
3 = 30

VID = 0.9557.

Frequency = 1601.66MHz - I assume that's like speedstep (which I disabled for the Q6600)?

Cpu temps at load in CS:S were 55 across all cores. I kept coretemp running as well as CPU-Z, and both read that the cpu is downclocking to 1600Mhz. I'll have to go into the bios and see what needs disabling. The in game performance certainly wasn't as smooth as normal, but I guess its normal to have to go through a learning curve with a different BIOS / mobo, windows updates, etc.

That said, considering how slow it was running, it wasn't that far off the Q6600's top whack speed!

Would someone mind posting a few 'essential' settings that is generally turned off in the BIOS, e.g. for my old one I disabled speedstep (and something else but I've forgotten it) and used pci-express frequency 101. Thanks. :)

Thanks for the responses. :)

It might be due to more updates, server lag or whatever. It's not 'that' bad but it isn't that good either. I'm seeing fps around 250 - 300 most of the time, then it'll stutter ever so slightly and the fps will sink to as low as around 55 or a little higher (4:3 1024x768 for CS:S / multicore rendering enabled / no AA / max AF / everything else e.g. model detail set to max / no motion blur.

Just quit playing after trying a couple of different servers, and one did run better than the other, which I expected. Funny thing being, though, that my cpu temps were even lower this time : no more than the mid forties.

Desktop and boot speed is surprisingly faster than before, and even my previous machine wasn't a slow one.

@ BrianB - yes, I minimized while playing. :)

I've got some Gigabyte mobo utilities installed. I'll have to check these out, since some of the ones I used in the past weren't worth it, or in some cases, were detrimental to the general running of my machine. :D

Time to read the manual. Thankfully, I quite enjoy doing this. :)
