Simple question which do I buy for gaming and general applications, running vista 64 and have 2 8800gtx's SLI'd, my Mobo is a evga 680i SLI 122CKNF68 (think it support 1333fsb) but could not say for sure.

CPU Budget £176 :D

(1) Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 "LGA775 Conroe" 3.00GHz (1333FSB) £176
(2) Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "LGA775 Kentsfield" 2.40GHz £176

1 or 2 ?

cheers

Most deffinatly 2.

You may not see the majority of benifits of four cores at the moment, but in the near future you're sure to. :)

Hmmm, but by the time Quad Core will be big, there should be a new line of processors available at better value than what's currently available.

I would seriously consider the E6850 as it is more overclockable than the Q6600.
Future proofing would demand the Q6600.

However, it all comes down to if you are willing to revise the CPU in your PC for when Quad Core computing becomes beneficial to you in your every day computer use.

Maybe wait 3 days more and get the G0 version of option 2, I know its about 10 pound more but it could be well worth it if it clocks a lot better.

£129.01 saved!

p.s: You notice all the people telling you to buy quad are quad owners! :D

It's a no brainer, Quad Core at that price you cant go wrong.

Yeh i understand some people saying they dont overclock as much but they should reach 3GHz fairly comfortable and thats faster enough even for applications only using 1 core and then when you use something which takes advantage of all 4 cores it will bemuch faster than a E6850.
