So ive got my mobo sorted - A gigabyte DS4.

Which would be the best chip to pair it with - an E6300 or E4300.

Obviously i will be overclocking and have DDR2 800 RAM so should be able to get to 400 FSB easily enough.

There both good, the e4300 is easier to overclock than the e6300, but if your mobo can do 480MHz-FSB+ then the e6300 would most likely end up faster.

The e6400 may be a better choice, although it costs a little more you can pick them up second hand for decent prices. The e6400 should get you a 3.2GHz overclock quite easily, up to maybe 3.6GHz if you get a good chip, have good cooling and know what u are doing!

Noob Question(think it's on Topic)

Why is a 4300 easier to clock than a 6300?. They both have the same Multiplier and the board they are being run on allows them to be clocked with the mem unlinked from CPU FSB.

Indeed. For a given clock speed, the fsb required is 7/9 of the fsb required for the 6300. If your mobo is the limitation with a 6300 you are better off with a 4300 as it will push the cpu further.

So either a cheaper board with a 4300, or a more expensive board for the 6300.

Well i ended up going for the 6300

Straight in at 400FSB to give 2.8Ghz, stable on stock volts. Very happy so far. Now to try for 3Ghz :)

forgive me for asking but im a noob.
i thought you had to gradually go to 400FSB or is it safe just to go there straight away?
what settings did you use to get to 400FSB?

thanks

Well yes usually you should do it gradually, but i knew this board was capable of 400FSB and id have been very suprised if the CPU couldnt do 2.8Ghz. Plus having DDR2 800 RAM means the RAM isnt overclocked at all yet.

I thought this board could do 1066MHz so why you worrying about 400MHz FSB ?
