Hey guys just wondering what CPU I should go for purly for a gaming rig please at the moment im thinking of going with a I7-3820 on a x79 mobo but would I be better going for a Z77 mobo and either the I5-3570K or the I7-3770K cpus's?

Are you planning on upgrading your gpu?

The processor you have is more than capable of running with higher spec cards than the one you currently have.

If you do upgrade though then a 3570k on z77 will be ideal.

i5 3570k and overclock it to 4.2-4.6Ghz, so get an aftermarket cooler. I'm using a closed loop and have it running nice and cool on 4.6.

Don't bother with the i7, unless you do a lot of encoding/rendering.

If you play a lot of DX9 games online like Arma2, WoW; then a 3570K is your best bet.

If you play titles like BF3/4, COD, Farcry3, games from Codemasters and the like... the FX-83## is just as good and you don't need a new Mothreboard.

between the 3820 and the 3770K, the 3770K is the faster chip however for *most* games the 3570K will perform just as well for a lot less £.

Obviously the are other considerations like the 3820's LGA2011 board having the option to upgrade to IB-E CPU's in Q3 2013 (LGA1155 has reached the end of its life now, no new i5/i7 chips are planned so any upgrade from a 3570K/3770K will require a new board) and it having a quad channel memory interface instead of dual and extra PCI-E lanes in case you want to use more than two GPU's in the future.

Just built one with i3570k and an ATI 7970 card and the thing just flies. Very happy with it. Went with MSI Z77 board, which wasn't too expensive and it's rock solid.

I have i5 3570 (stock 3.4) at Z77 Micro-ATX mobo, with huge heatsink on top ( Arctic Cooling Freezer Xtreme Rev.2 ), works great and is cool under load ( mostly playing MMORPGs ).
