In the past I've always taken the Intel route. This has been the case since my first 386 CPU.
I am in the position where I'm trying to build a capable machine for gaming and "general bits & pieces" around a £500 - £550 budget.
With that budget in mind I believe that around £100 - £150 on the CPU is where I'm looking.
Should I stick with what I know - and if so, which CPU for around this budget should I really be looking at?
Or have AMD come on "leaps and bounds" and I should possible consider these? In the past the AMD option was usually cheaper, however the motherboard more expensive. Is this still the case?

Cheers.

I replaced my i5 2500k with a second hand i7 2600k and managed to get it for £120 of ebay which is a reasonable price! and a lot of people will recommend the 2600 which is reason I chose!

You could give AMD a try, they're pretty good if you're on a budget (FX-8350 is what I'd recommend) I don't think the mobos are that pricey, you can use pretty much any old FX board.

If you want to go with Intel I'd suggest the 3570k, about £50 or so more expensive but it gets better performance per watt than the 8350.
