Guys ive been caught in an upgrade struggle reading to many threads and searching all over.

I currently have a manchester core amd64 3500+ cpu
I cant find anywhere on the net where its been overclocked.

I was going for a 144 opteron then i was going to 170 then x2 3800 then 4200 now im going to 4800 i mean jesus i need to stop.

i think the nice price of x2 3800 and 4200 are quite a nice upgrade but again im confused over 2.0 and 2.2ghz as im running 2.2 now on 3500+. I get the dual core bit its too cores but will it out peform my 3500+ in all aspects.

I love quake 4 and theres a dual core patch. Just wondering if the dual core patched games will be faster?

If you buy a dual core CPU that runs at the same clock speed as your single core CPU and has the same amount of cache, it will perform the same as your single core CPU in programs and games that don't make use of multi cores.

If you're multi tasking a lot or play any games that make use of dual cores, it will walk all over your single core as you have in effect of the processor you currently have:)

More and more games and programs are becoming dual core now and it is the future, so as more things use both cores you will see more of a performance boost:)

As said more & moe programs are being patched or made to support dual core.

If it was me it would be the X2 3800+ or even better the X2 4400+ (extra L2 cache)!

right read a review on the new patch using dual core. by enabling smp1 they saw a gain of between 30 to 60%. so by getting just a 3800+ im going to see a differance again this boost goes to what res you run the games.

and again going by past years of quake patches will always come out and better dual core optimizations.

They compared 3800 x2 to 4800 x2 with smp1 enabled. there isnt anything in them.

so im going for the cheapest option and then going to overclock it.

Thanks guys for clearing this up and the help that was given..

Just Glad i didnt blow more money and then am2 comes come nice little upgrade.

Is overclocking a duel core any different than a single core?

Like...do you have to overclock both cores? :/

Since both cores derive their clock frequency from the same source you can't clock each CPU core independently.

The process of overclocking a dual core CPU is no different to overclocking a single core. The issues come when one core is less stable at a given frequency than the other. To overcome this you have to raise the VCore to get stability on both cores.

Excactly, you are limited by the slowest core so the chance of a very good overclock is smaller.
