Hi all

I need a new cpu to go with my new graphics card amd 7950 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-065-HS&tool=3
I mainly play MMo's like rift world of tanks, terra that sort of thing.

I've done a lot of reading and everything points towards Intel either I5 or I7 k series chip... some reason I still warm to the AMD 8350 but everything I have read says I5,I7 but my heart is saying AMD 8350.

My current cpu is AMD phenom x6 1055t clocked to 3.5.

Would appreciate any help as pulling my hair out trying to decide.

No help but for some reason I stay loyal to AMD also, maybe it's the cost of Intel based systems I don't know, so I just bought the Asus Crosshair V Formula Z and will be getting the 8350 when I can afford it. But for now I will put my Phenom 965 BE in, I was running that on stock cooling @ 3.75 with no heat issues on my old board.
Lots of benchmarks will put the Intel's ahead but as long as my system does what I want, then I'm happy to stay with AMD.

For MMO's Intel are undeniably better.
If you've got an AM3+ board though, an FX83 is a good shout, if you need a new board, i5 3570k all the way, or, if you've got the mega bucks, a 3770k.

World o tanks runs at max settings 1920/1200 at minimum 40FPS on Phenom II 960T
The thing is get the first cpu core as high as possible

That CPU has 3Ghz x4
Got it at
Core 0 3.8Ghz
Core 1 3.0Ghz
Core 2 2.6Ghz
Core 3 2.6Ghz
And that got me a world of in game performance

world of tanks maxed 3570k and a gtx470 ran really well for me. can't be too specific with the fps as i cant remember exactly but it was very playable, i mean mostly over 60fps and smooth!
3570k @4.5 and at 1920x1080p

I was loyal to AMD for years, my previous CPU being an AMD 965 but it was an MMO, Planetside 2 that showed how far behind AMD is in performance for MMO games where it's more CPU intensive.

Loads of AMD users are really struggling to run that game, even 8350 owners, as the per core performance ain't that much better than a Phenom II, but the Intel chips fare much better in it.

I went out and bought a 3570k and I'm glad I did, even though I do feel a bit disloyal to AMD.

For MMO's I'd recommend an Intel as the CPU performance is more important but for other games you'll normally be fine with an 8350, it even excels in some games like Crysis 3.

As for the price, if you compare an 8350 + mobo to a 3570k + mobo there isn't as much in it as some people seem to think. Ok, you may get a couple more USB 3.0 or Sata 3 ports for your money but is that more important than game performance, which you're primarily upgrading for?

AMD for me ... everything I am playing is nice and smooth

Im running Star Trek blu ray 1080p on one screen web and EVE maxed settings on another and world of tanks max settings on my third screen and its all smooth so AMD is just fine for me :)

The biggest problem with MMOs is that they have always been a case of utilizing low number of cores/poor utilizing of cores...and because of this, Intel will always do better in this regard (until AMD's CPU can match Intel's IPC wise).

What motherboard has the OP have??

My mate has an FX6300 overclocked to 4.3GHZ,and PS2 performance seems OK,and he runs WoW and D3 fine, and has put hundreds of hours into the latter games. If anything,WoW performance seems much better with the newer AMD CPUs for some reason, when compared to the old ones. The latest SC2 expansion shows the same thing and you are talking over a 30% improvement.

The Intel CPUs tend to be ahead though.

However,PS2 has very variable performance. I have noticed it with my Core i5,and even other people I know with higher clocked ones. It would be nice to see a website test the latest version of the game,as it has some major changes to it.

If I were getting a Core i5 though,I would wait for Haswell anyway.

Thanks all for the feed back :)

My mobo atm is an gigabyte GA-MA74GMT-S2 says AM3 so dont think it supports the new FX chips.

I agree would be nice to see some benchmarks done with MMO's in mind, than the normal fps type benchmarks.

Would very much like something that's going to last me another 2 years.

Again thanks very much for all the feedback I've still not made my mind up yet...

Not sure what you mean buy getting your first cpu core high as possible, could you please explain thanks.

World of Tanks is a single-threaded game (if I'm not mistaken), so rather than having average clock speed across all cores, it would be more beneficial to have one core at higher clock speed.

I would go for an I5 personally, as everyone says they are better for gaming. I wanted a 8350 (but got a FX6300 as my motherboard wouldnt support the 8350). I was tempted to go I5 but would have had to buy a new motherboard. Although Im well chuffed with my 6300 @ 4ghz

can you change the way the core works in single threaded games?

It's not that, it's the fact he's able to get a higher core clock on his first core by lowering that of the others as they're redundant.
I could easily get a 5GHZ 2500K core. I currently just run at 4.8GHZ on 4 cores.
