Which CPU to buy?

I am looking for a CPU in or abouts the €140 price range.

I see loads of flavours of intels and AMD's out there. (Used to be a big AMD fanboy)

So what would be the top 2 CPU's you would recommend? I dont want to OC it, just want a fast and very stable CPU for games and running fraps at the same time. I'd probably run win2k as my OS for a while. Or XP if its really recommended.

Want to build my system around the CPU i get so i need to decide that first.

Many thanks.

Any pro's cons atm with Intel & Athlon? Work mate told me Intel are making better chips atm but AMD always were the best bang for your buck! So given the 140£ what CPU is best? Many thanks

I posted a thread recently regarding a poosible new system build, and like you i have been an AMD fan for the last 4 years.
Was gonna put in the new AM2 processor - 4600 dual core i believe, but have been advised to go for the Intel Core 2 Duo E6300.
Is around the £118 which i think is about 170 Euro, so on advice given to me, i would go Intel.

You have to be blindly devoted to AMD to choose them over the Core 2 Duo chips these days
Get either this This one :)
or This one :)
There is also the 4300 out now.

Are you upgrading your whole system?

Simple answer is; AMD if you cant be botherd to change ram and mobo, Intel if you can. :) In your case Intel since its a new build. ;)

Right now is not a bad time to buy, but with new cpus on the way we can only expect a price correction. This may not mean much to the E6300, but others should demonstrate a reality-check.
I know (waits to be flamed :p ) that this is almost always true, but H2'07 will see some serious reduction, and a curve trending that way from late Q1. If you can hold your water a month or three you'd see a value bump. Depends on the (real) urgency to upgrade.

i have also heard that AMD are gonna bringing out yet another socket, to replace *** AM2, which is another reason why i am deciding to go over to Intel.

In the passed it was AMD that stuck with the same socket for a while (Sckt A), whereas now the glove seems to be on the other foot with Intel sticking with one for a while.

I was gonna have to move to DDR2 anyways so may as well go with the best valued chip / overclock potential chip, at the moment.

Ok guys you've got me convinced!

Going to order up a system tomorrow with the E6300 at the center of the bad boy!

So what motherboard and ram would you recommend to match that CPU?
I want something that is reliable and fast... I dont want anymore hardware failures!

I am not sure whats the best way to match RAM/Mobo/CPU given the speed of the CPU. Maybe ye guys know that!

:) All excited now!

If you're going to overclock DEFINITELY buy an E4300 instead of a E6300 as it's cheaper and the higher multiplier will hopefully give you higher overclocks!

Yeah i'll agree - Gigabyte motherboards are awesome. Got the DS4 here and it is definitely the best motherboard i've owned. Got my e6300 at 2.8Ghz at the moment but it can easily overclock higher still.
