Hi Guys,

I use my PC mainly for gaming. I dont do any video stuff. What do you think would be a good upgrade from my current e6600 clocked at 3.11Ghz.

I game at 1680 x 1050 on a 22", although I may get a 24" in the near future.

My budget is around £150. I would also like to overclock the new cpu.

Any help or recommendations would be great.

Thanks in advance :)

Sorry to rez my old thread but why dont people think it is worth upgrading the CPU?

looking at the link that RJC posted arnt all those chips compatible with my mobo?

Thanks

An E6600 is still a very capable cpu, especially when overclocked. You'd get more of a gain upgrading the video card, althought you already have a 4870, so there is not much point. If anything you should just save the money for a new screen.

The CPU'S on the list will be a back-ward step or not worth the upgrade due to minimal performance gains.

If you do want to upgarde then a new board will be needed which can take the E8XXX range or Q9xxx range.

Thank you all for your help

Nice thread, pastymuncher.

Its sinking in now, just a few more questions If I may

On the website (which wouldn’t load due to high usage yesterday) it says:

‘Optional Support for 45nm Wolfdale / Yorkfield CPUs,’

Is this a fancy way of saying ‘This aint gunna work mate’

I will take your collective advice and buy an aftermarket cooler and overclock it to an inch of it’s life.

Could someone please recommend me a nice cooler for the E6600

Cheers
