I currently have an E6300 Core2Duo and an ATI 1950pro and am looking to upgrade.

I'm looking at the ATI4870 and think I may need to upgrade my processor to take advantage of the new graphics card (I run at 1920x1200 on a 24" dell).

So what are my CPU options ? I mainly do 3d rendering, 2D graphics and games (mainly driving games)

Any help or advice as to what to go for (best bang for buck.. I'm not rich) would be very much appreciated.. thanks

Best bang for buck would be to overclock your E6300 (should easily hit 3Ghz+ depending on your mobo) and to get a 4870. You may need a better cooler for the cpu though.

+1 but id say get a 4850, thats the best bang for your buck

maybe an E8600? Or if you think you render/multi task could get a q6600/q9550

i suppose you missed the following sentence:

get this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail

and for CPU cooler, if this fits into your case and you need it, http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-002-SB&tool=3 although that price is balls, dont pay more than £30

Graphics card wise its a split decision between a 4850 and a 4870, though I would go for the 4870 for that resolution.

For the processor it would be best to go for a quad core as you said you do 3d rendering, the quad core will hugely exceed at this when compared to a dual core processor and bang for buck that will be a q6600.

i had an old gigabyte where my e6300 did 2.7 stable

since i got my p5qe its sitting pretty at 3.2GHz for benchies
3ghz was easy on my board - i changed the fsb and memory settings and its prime stable for as long as you like never going above 55'C at full load

i put it at 3GHz for normal use - this is under a thermaltake v1 [not the best cpu cooler ever]

i would suggest sticking with it
the 6300 is still a good, capable chip
and 12500 points in 3dmark 06 is more than enough for me for a while
especially since my old amd only managed 8900 [3dmark 06] at similar speeds and took a lot more effort to clock

if i do upgrade it will be because i get a good deal on an E8XXX chip
