Right, i'm looking at buying me a Cry Baby, ive wanted one for a while now because i like the sound of them and it adds variety to a solo, and it would be useful to have one because my band want to cover enter sandman and have you heard that song without one?! bleurgh! haha

there are just so many different versions now! its unbelievable.

ive got the choice down to about 4 i think, but am very open to suggestions! ive just never come across a shop that has more than 2 or 3 different ones in stock at any one time available to try.

the shortlist:

The original Cry Baby - £60
535Q - ~£100
The Zakk Wylde signature - £120
The new Slash signature - £200

now i have no idea which one to pick, i think the slash one is a bit of a pipe dream as i couldnt see myself spending £200 on it!

Depends on what you're after, but I looked at the Zakk Wylde model and it was pretty nifty.. beats the hell out of all the wah's on my GT-6 :)

I don't think I could bring myself to spend £200 on a wah, that's crazy money just to fuel Slash's JD habit.

i'd go for the Zakk Wylde if i was choosing from that list, based on the fact that it's pretty much the only "effect" he uses (if an interview in Total Guitar is to be believed) and my god, does he use it well!?

having said that, i've had an original crybaby and i cant really imagine what more you'd want to do with it. have you checked out Morley wahs? the guitarist in a band i used to be in had one and it was brilliant. i believe Tom Morello used Morley as well...correct me if i'm (quite possibly) wrong.

was talking with andelusion about morelys, because iirc he has one, and he says he really regrets buying it over a crybaby.

i know vai uses a morley, didnt know morello used one, i thought he used a crybaby, will check :)

i'm after a wah with loooads of sweep, a really good range as the Vox one i have with my amp doesnt really go very far. less of a "wah wah" more of a "waaaaah"

hehe, i've never actually used one so i cant personally vouch for it, but he used to make it sound really good.

my crybaby was ace though, but it's always nice to have options :)

just looks like a tweaked crybaby with balls of steel. i shouldnt imagine you'd notice a lot of difference aurally...i might be wrong...but it'd be worth it (for me at least) to get the Wylde one, as it looks like it can take a beating, and my pedals tend to :o

i think i will probably end up with the zakk wylde one in all fairness. i just wanna go somewhere and test out those 4 heh.

Well, iirc, GB magazine said that the Wylde wah had a pretty narrow sweep, as he was one of the few guitarists who plays 'traditional heavy metal' and he didn't need muffled lows and shrieking highs, or something to that effect. I'll try to dig out the review and check this out later. ;)

The 535Q and 95Q (noticed it wasnt on your list) are supposed to be pretty good, what with the Q control and all. Satriani used to use (or does he still use?) the 535Q, so does Carlos Santana and many other famous guitarists, so it can't be too bad. :p

I thought it was the same, just without the black paint and with a galvanised finish instead?

on the dunlop website it says it's been tweaked to zakk's preferences...whatever that means

Theres only one - the original Cry Baby.
If I had a pound for the amount of guitarists who've tried others and then gone back I'd have at least a tenner.

You're right, just looked up the review, and it says that it's made of a 'semi-unfinished sinc alloy'. :o
