which Distro For File Server+Streaming

I live in hope that one day somebody will write a foolproof frontend to ZFS and build a NAS device based on it, it's so obviously powerful and stamps all over WHS but I just can't be bothered admin-ing my home storage from the command line...
The next version of FreeNAS (based on FreeBSD 8.0) should have a more usable (and user-friendly) implementation of ZFS - the project has recently been bought out by a company called iXsystems, and hopefully they should have more resources and expertise to throw at it.

I still prefer WHS, but it keeps getting closer. I am about to replace a FreeNAS box in work with it for the Greyhole functionality, just waiting for it to come out of beta (Greyhole that is).
See above... not to dismiss the capabilities of WHS's drive extender (and now Greyhole), but they do seem a bit of a primitive kludge when you look at what ZFS can do natively. :)

One day, when I'm next very bored I'm going to put together a cut down NAS box based on opensolaris and write a quick frontend for it as my contribution to the open source universe...one day...

Unless freeNAS beats me to it, interesting they're working on a user freindly ZFS implementation...

FreeNAS actually already has ZFS, but as the current stable release is based on FreeBSD 7.2, it's ZFS v6, which isn't as functional as later versions and seems to need a fair bit of nannying to avoid kernel panics. There's an unofficial build using ZFS 13 (as per FreeBSD 8.0), which might be useful for messing about with, although I'm not sure I'd use it for anything critical.

You'll need Solaris for the very latest ZFS implementation of course, and I will add at this point that I hate Solaris with a vengeance. :D

try amahi. not a distro in itself but sets one up for you as I recall it used fedora but working distro knowledge is minimum as it's pretty much automated.

well i tried to install ubuntu

& i got Errors all over the place at the end of the install.

apparently loads people are getting it with ubuntu 10.04
end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 216176

tried 2 different disks now so

im gunna download fedora 12 and give it a shot to rule out my cds/CDdrive as the problem.

EDIT Running Fedora 12 Final - Fine had slight problem with software update but

yum clean all + yum update
fixed it

its now updating via terminal which in geeky terms looks cool :)

+1 for fedora

Been running fedora on my home server for years now. Between fedora and the fedora easylife project (a little app you install that gives the ability to do most of the commonly required tasks of a new install like install flash, codecs etc) I find it very straight forward.

Certainly not the most efficient server OS but for home it makes perfect sense, easy to configure and administer, happily running VNC, even remotely. I also run a teamspeak server on it, a mediatomb streaming server, it's our print server (using turboprint to give the full feature of our photo printer) I'm in the process of trying to work out how to host our scanner on it and somehow share that to the windows boxes.

Servers currently running fedora 10, its dues an upgrade soon, nearly put Fedora 13 beta on it this weekend as I was so impressed by the test install of the beta I put on my main desktop.

i think im going to move away from Fedora,

it doesnt like the Samba GUI & seems quite sluggish all around, might be my ATI graphic card, might try ubuntu.
