Hi Everyone,

I'm looking at getting a HP Microserver and turning it into a NAS for media streaming purposes.

Because of this, should I pick a particular drive over another? For example, I can get a 3TB Seagate Barracuda or £90.

Also, I did plan on using RAID5, but would like to hear alternatives if anyone has any recommendations. Ideally, i'd like to add 1 3TB drive and expand it over a couple of months.

Thanks,

If you're going to be dragging the data over a network then disk speed isn't going to be hugely influential, so whichever meets your budget and space requirement.

You don't have to run raid, if you don't select that option the disks show up as individual drives in windows. You can use them individually or span them in windows etc.

I'm using WD Red 3TB in JBOD.

Which OS are you planning to use? If you plan on software RAID in Windows 8 or Server 2012, then I would not recommend adding drives as you go because the OS does not automatically rebalance the data across all disks when a new disk is added.

Do you really need to use RAID? Are you looking for redundancy, speed or backup?
