Due to a recent drive failiure i have decided its time for a new pc + raid array. I'm thinking something like:

3 X 750gb /1tb drives with raid 5 ?

Would this be a sensible solution for a home pc mainly used for image editing and light gaming use. Would there be an advantage in a further mirrored set of smaller drives just for operating system etc. Also what drives should i be looking at any reccomendations ?

Also will 3 x 1tb in raid 5 = 3tb or storage ?

Will i need a raid controller ? - I will be shopping for a motherboard next but my main concern for the new systrem is reliability so if theres a mobo which will do what i require im open to suggestions for that as well.

Any help or advice would be most appreciated.

I'm going for a RAID 5 setup with 1TB drives. After having used a cheap XFX RAID controller and have it fail I've decided on a Highpoint controller, has 8 SATA ports and uses a PCIe x4 slot. It's expandable so I can add more drives as I buy them and get 7TB.

My setup is in a server and just used for file storage really.

RAID 5 with 3 x 1TB drives gives 2TB storage, the rest is parity.
