E0 or G0 stepping

Which one is better and why ? - for overclocking potential

OEM version
Q9550@ 2.83GHZ
Core stepping - E0
45nm
Bus speed - 1333MHz FSB
12MB Cache

VS

Retail version
Q6600 Energy Efficient 95W Edition @ 2.40GHZ
Core stepping - G0
65nm
Bus speed - 1066MHz FSB
6MB Cache

Anyway the Q9550 is better. It's faster clock for clock and also has a higher default clockspeed, and also can overclock much higher on averaeg.

I agree, assuming you have a mobo capable of running a 45nm quad

EDIT : Id be very tempted by that Q6700 on offer at £131 this week

Theyre both good chips (ive owned both) the q6600 GO is the older 65nm, stock clock of 2.4ghz, 8mb l2 cache, q9550 EO stepping is the newer 45nm, 2.83ghz, 12mb l2 cache. The q9550 will run cooler and overclock higher on lower voltage, cant see the q6600 listed on ocuk to see what the price is, but if buying now id opt for the q9550.

The first model q6600's were b3, followed by the GO, on the q9550, first version was c1, new stepping is the eo.

If you order one now it will more than likely be an EO stepping, i got mine from ocuk a few weeks ago and its an EO, there may be a few of the older C1 steppings in stock. but the chances of getting one should be slim, the EO will run cooler and generally overclock a bit more.

The Q9550 could be either, most stocks of the C1 have filtered through so more than likely that you will get an E0, but not certain.

OCUK don't guarantee you will get one either like they did with the G0 Q6600.

Would go for the Q9550 in reply to original question, faster, cooler and clock higher.

However you really don't have the best board to get it clocked.

The Q6700's another nice chip, especially at those prices. Great for older motherboards with compatibility issues. I use one in my BadAxe (which officially doesnt even support quads), and I still get a decent clock speed out of it :)

i bought the same cpu 2 weeks ago, currently running at 3.5 gig overclocked.

no problems.

i personally wouldnt be considering spending £200 on a processor for an obsolete socket
if it were my brass i would be looking at a steady upgrade to i7
