Sorry for the boring question, but I'm moving back to the UK next month and need an Electricity/Gas supplier and having been away for a few years I'm an absolute noob on what the deal is these days.
Back in 2010 I was with British Gas before on a dual fuel traffic spending about £40 electric and £50 gas/month I think. Guess it might be a lot more nowadays.

Looking for a supplier who can offer both on one bill just for easyness. Having trouble using the comparison sites as I have nothing to compare with!

Also keep hearing about 'smart meters', must be a recent thing. What are they and do I want one?

Weve recently moved to Ovo Energy. They were the cheapest for us, dual fuel and the bills are emailed to us in PDF format etc.

For smartphone owners, British Gas have an excellent meter reading app. It lets you turn on the phone's camera flash as a torch to help you read the meter. lt shows you stats of your usage and compares your usage with similar properties in the area. You also get a live usage monitor to attach to the cable coming out of the meter.

BG offer joint invoicing. They have some fixed price tarriffs but since Ofgem rulings their standard tarriff is called clear and simple. This is the original model of daily standing charge and single rate for energy used. As opposed to the two tier system.

They are now a nectar partner so if you like that kind of thing you can collect points every quarter. Just for being a customer.

Not sure about other suppliers but BG only offer billing SMART mtrs in some areas. Pay as you go smart mtrs are still in trial stage and not fully rolled out. So you don't need one as such but UK gov is aiming to have all UK on smart mtrs by 2020 . Your supplier will get in touch if they want to install one at your prop. It nevers hurts to ask of course if you are interested.

If you are going the pay as you go route bg is the only supplier that offers home top up terminals ( like a paypoint ) for both gas and electric . Means you never have to go to shop to top up.

Their duel fuel discount is £15 a year. If you want a meter exchange they won't pass on any cost to you unlike some other suppliers.

While they have freephone numbers for customer service they have both onshore and offshore customer service centres for both pay as you go and credit. When you call there is no way to guarantee speaking to an onshore agent.

The pay as you go side of the business is open 24 / 7 and credit is 8-8 m-f 8-6 sat. But you can manage your account online if credit and that has all the facilities you need.

In terms of price Bg are competetive for elec but not for gas. I have both with them though as i like the customer service.

Hope that's been of some use to you.

I don't know kuch about other suppliers so can't comment.

We are with British gas, no issues and cheapest option for us.

Just check on money supermarket and see what is cheapest option. Don't bother reading reviews as I am yet to see any supplier receive a decent one!!

I'm with first utility, had a few tries lately but can't beat their tariff.

I think I amuse the energy suppliers who call. I just ask for the daily and unit charges from them and tell them how much more they cost than my current deal.

You really need to know what your gas and electricity usage is to be able to choose the cheapest provider, plus it varies from area to area. Most providers do dual fuel and you usually get some kind of discount for getting both from them.
