given that this is a national service type thing, I think firefighting could be quite interesting

if it were long term career though then I'd go with police - I'd be quite interested in the investigations side of it... though I'd suspect if there was such a thing as national service policing then you'd be the ones dealing with drunks and smack heads on a Friday night etc.. which would be much less appealing

If you're lucky, you might get a 2l Mondeo or a Skoda Scout...

If you're very very lucky you might get something with a 2.5l engine....in a 5.5t Mercedes Sprinter.
 
I would probably pick Police but I feel like a bit of traitor saying that considering I am a Community First Responder for an Ambulance Service...

Id go in as Chief Constable obviously I would get a Jaaaaag with a bloke up front driving me to my funny hand shake meetings.
 
Fire.

Police - no I would end up kicking the crap out of scumbags

Ambulance - no, don't want to deal with all the nasty injuries
 
Fire (fire and rescue).

I think I'd feel too affected not being able to save people's lives (kids in particular) if I was a paramedic, as well as dealing with people's self inflected drinking habits.

Police I'd end hurting a suspect and would be disciplined too often, unless I could be a traffic cop that would be fun as I love driving. I would get frustrated not doing any decent crime fighting.

Calls would be dull.

Yeah. :(

I worked with a fireman once that went to a guy that got caught up in a wheat thresher, body churned up and his old boy speared on one of the spikes. Another accident he spoke about where two half of one guy ended up in two different cars. Grim.

They all have their down sides to contemplate.

Yes first aid would be learnt and it could apply to youngsters that have experience with dog training and the such but it's very niche.

I would say in the eyes of national service the coast guard is for seasoned guys with specific skills, usually from the army. No?

There are plenty of support roles for coastguard/lifeboat service and neither really get the recognition they deserve.

While I'm generally against conscription, etc. unless absolutely necessary a compulsory year working within the emergency services structure wouldn't be a bad idea.

While neither would really be my cup of tea I work best when the pressure is on control or A&E would be where I could apply myself the best.
 
Probably police or ambulance. I'm good at keeping calm and usually successful in defusing situations before they get out of hand. Also, blood doesn't bother me.
