Hi all,

Anyone got any recommendations on a decent solid reliable external backup drive for daily backups.

Looking at around 1TB storage and looking to do one week of backups then swap and take the other home.

:)

Western digi drive if possible

We've been using Samsungs for a while for one client who won't invest in a decent backup solution.

I'd get 5 and do a daily rotation or you're asking for trouble if a drive dies and you have to go back a week.

Its for a small business of 5 users

Server is set-up on a HP Microserver, only thing they do internally is file server with some permissions

Their microserver is set-up for RAID, I was going to get them to stick the drive in on a monday and let the software do the backups, then the following Monday swap the drive and take other home.

Im struggling to get them to invest in a small dedicated firewall at the moment they are thinking its fine running on the BT Business hub despite me telling them, they are slowly coming round.

They already have an external drive, so with the additional of the 2 big drives that will be 3 although the existing one is only 250GB

What server OS are you using and what backup software?

If you don't change them daily it's not going to help you recover from a real disaster.

You could use something like cloudberry to backup to a NAS, which then syncs offsite to cloud storage. Azure do 10GB for 0.15p a month so besides a small outlay for a NAS and the sofware the monthly cost is low and it's much better than using two USB drives :)

Plus you could always mark up the cloud storage and make a few quid extra :)

Have a look at RDX removable media drives as well - I am a recent convert having had someone suggest them to me on here. Much more robust solution than e.g. consumer grade USB removable drives, and don't cost that much more.

Until their FTTC goes in they are only relying on ADSL at the moment, they should be getting fibre soon to where they can do some backups to the cloud.

Using Acronis Backup and Recovery, iv done a few restores for them which seem to do them fine.

Windows Server 2008 R2

I will look at RDX aswel, its either going to be a standard form external hard drive (western digi) or RDX.

RDX are those just hot swappable hard drives in an enclosure?

Pretty much, although the enclosures are more rugged than consumer drives, so can tolerate being dropped etc.

The actual RDX "drive" appears as a Drive letter (without media), so the drive letter remains constant (unlike USB Drives which can change).

RDX is a standard in much the same way as LTO Tape Drives though, so you can be sure that the media and drives will be available for a long time.

I am using Tandberg RDX media which all comes with 3 Year warranty, and with a USB3.0 "drive", gives decent performance.

I've used RDX drives in the past and not had any issues.

Acronis is great but I'd still switch drives on a daily basis.
