Hey guys,

Just a quick question, my friend is looking to buy an external HDD, there's 2 in the price range, both 320Gb.

Western Digital 320GB MyBook Essential USB2.0 7200RPM 8MB Cache

or

Maxtor U15H320 320GB 16MB Cache USB2.0 External Hard Drive

I personally think the WD drive, because they're moer reliable i've heard.

Does it matter much about the smaller Cache compared to the Maxtor one?

Any help would be great, thanks. :)

Get the Western Digital.

Or you could buy your own enclosure and fit a drive of your choice, it will probably work out cheaper.

Hehe, i like the pic!

Thanks for the quick reply, im not gifted enough to put my own together, well gifted's not the word.... im Lazy! :p :D

Thanks again mate :)

lol, my 8 year old nephew could put together an external hd. It's cake.
Just get an iceybox and a 320gb seagate 7200.10, it's the only way to get a 5 year warranty.

Are both drives powered from the USB port or do they need to be plugged in to a socket? I'm looking at the same drives myself. Do they just appear as regular hard drives or do they require and additional software for installation?

Both of the quoted drives will need an external power supply, they use 3.5" HDDs which need both 12V & 5V supplies - USB only supplies 5V and with too low a maximum current to drive a 3.5" disk. If you look at some of the external disks based on laptop drives they tend to be USB powered.

An external HDD should just appear as another drive in My Computer, it should pick up whatever the next free drive letter is.
