I'm currently with be and I have been for the last several years however since moving last year (about a mile across York) my speed had gone from 13 to 3.8mb. This is better than most people in my area but still pretty poor. Be also provide my landline, not that I really use that.

I don't want to go with sky, bt or virgin so I'm not really sure what my options are. Plusnet look ok, I take it they are just selling me the bt package under another name with the same traffic management? I don't really use torrents or play online games, I just want fast net for browsing and streaming. I don't really need fibre speeds as I was happy with 13mb but sub 4mb is not good enough and fibre looks like the only other option.

Thanks in advance.

I have no issue with the bt product, but I don't want to have to deal with them directly as I had lots of problems with them back in the days of 0.5mb adsl.

I have no desire to get involved with sky either as I don't really watch tv and much the same with virgin. Do virgin use the bt lines or not? I don't have cable in my area.

Plusnet are part owned by BT... they gave no support phone number, the only way to log a fault is online... IF they call you (big if) and you dont answer, they'll take another 48 hours to call you again...

i had a minor fault a few times and it took 2-3 weeks of basically no connection to get sorted... they also pretty much refuse to get bt involved for fear of getting charged by bt for fixing the fault

worst customer support of the lot... went back to BT directlt it was that bad
now with virgin and had no problems so far

bt are ok if you are persistent but calling india is always a pain

Just go for BT Infinity, the only thing they throttle is torrents, for your use you'll be fine.

Sky Fibre is pretty good though if you want something truly unlimited.

Virgin is fine... as long as you're not in a congested area.

Just checked the Virgin website and they are not an option, I thought they used BT lines but I think they use the old Cable and Wireless ones so I can't get that. Looks like it's BT, Plusnet or some other BT reseller. Do I have to use the homehub? I already have a decent HP switch and an airport express.

I can't remember the exact details of the technical problem I had but BT were unable to fix it by doing a line check and telling me to turn things off and on again. I fixed it by moving to nildram. My friend couldn't get her internet working, after numerous calls to their so called technical support and lots of line checks carried out they sent her another router, this didn't fix things so they sent her another. That didn't sort things either so she paid for a BT engineer to come out, it turned out she had turned the wifi off on her laptop by mistake. Though she was able to cover the cost of the BT callout by selling the spare routers on ebay!

Thanks for everyones help.

I've been with PlusNET for over 7 years, and they have always been fast, friendly and helpful. I couldn't be happier with the service. Also, I am sure there is a support number. I usually call them, and speak to a person whose native language is English, within a couple of minutes.

BT Infinity by far. I'm still waiting on it. Currently using/on Virgin Media and from my review it is bad. I'd also look into Sky Fibre Optic which is being rolled out too.
