which golf clubs?

If your serious about golf it would probably be better to go to a shop and get custom made shafts so they are the right length. If it's a half decent store they will measure your swing speed as well so you have the right shaft stiffness.

well i'm pretty much a beginner ive had lessons and i know the game well been playing for years on and off looking to take it to the next step.

I'm not sure how much custom made clubs cost, I'm sure someone on here will know and you can see whether it's within your budget.

Also are you comfortable using drivers/woods? Some people never get on with them and pefer to have extra irons/wedges instead.

I second American Golf. Cheaper than a pro shop and most internet places, and they have loads of helpful people as well as good facilities.

Riddler, where are you based? I know of a few custom fitting places in the Uk and I'd definitely recommend going down that route.

Got my Wilson Deep Red's custom fitted a couple of years ago and it's improved my iron play.

It helps eliminate slicing and hooking.

You can try out different combinations if shaft, clubhead etc.

Also, try out as different types of iron as you can. And take into account resale value afterwards.

Ping always do well as they don't change their range very often unlike TaylorMade.

I got custom fit at my local shop, cost me £25 for the fitting, which they gave me back when I ordered a set of clubs.

I would imagine that most clubs will be the same

just a note on custom fitting. i've got a set deep red 1s, love them to bits. i went to get them custom fitted and the guy (in american golf) said to me that most clubs are set up for the "average person" in mind, and that unless you are bigger or smaller than the norm then you probably wont need to have them altered.

in all likelihood, if you buy a set of pings, callaways, taylor made, or any of the top end, top price makes then they will be made to measure (or at least they were when i was buying a few years ago).

oh, and make sure you try every club within your price range, the most important thing is how they feel.

no its doesnt generally....what it does is gets the length and lie right so that when you come down to impact the ball the club head is in the right place...and level. If its not right you can tend to hit the ground first sometimes with the toe or heal of the club...which can create unwanted shots. The head can still be in the right place even if it is open or shut which cause slices and hooks.
If you are very tall or quite small then I would recommend getting them fitted. For most...standard length and lie do OK. Ive always had mine fitted and TBH I dont know if it really makes much difference.

For that kind off money...I would get yoursel a decent sett of irons...but second hand...spend maybe £300. You will keep the irons the longest. Callaway, taylor made, mizuno or the likes. Dont buy cheapees just cos they are new and shiny for £200. Buy a good set second hand. Believe me...the bay of the E have some majic deals if you want to buy a good set straight out. Check the shops first.

If you are just starting...get maybe a decent 3 wood. a driver and 5 wood is up to you...again buy decent second hand...dont get cheep newbies!
