im going to be buying a new gpu in the next couple of weeks but cant decide between the gtx 960 4gb or the r9 380 4gb,,,,which is the best to go for in your oppinion?

at the moment i have the gtx 750 ti and really LOVE the shadowplay feature,,it makes recording soooo easy im not sure if i can go without it now lol,,,which would you choose and why? HELP!! lol :D

i would love to go for the gtx 970 but ive only got the athlon x4 860k cpu and im not sure but think it would be quite a big bottleneck with the 970,,,,

Well think about it this way - if you get the GTX 970 now you probably won't have to upgrade your GPU when you decide on getting a better cpu. And why not get the best GPU for the money? ;)

hi,,im not sure there is a better cpu on the fm2/fm2+ than the athlon 860k? i have the crossblade ranger motherboard,,im also not sure if amd will be bringing out a better cpu for my board in the future? otherwise i may of been tempted :)
 
Not all games will be bottlenecked by your CPU ... more games are relying on GPU grunt so I would get the GTX 970 as the games that can make use of the extra grunt will..

I am an AMD'er and I will be amazed if AMD release another cpu in any of the current family as the next cpu's from AMD will be a socket upgrade I would think ??

When you do come to upgrade the motherboard and cpu you will have a decent GPU as said above.

If you want to stick with AMD you can pick up a used 8350 + Motherboard at a good price so look out for that in a few months time maybe ?

thanks for reply,,do you think i would still get overall better performance with a 970 even with the bottleneck than going with say a 960/380? im quite new to pc gaming so still learning,,,if i would get best performance with the 970 then i will get it,,,will i get less fps with the 970 when it does bottleneck than when using say a 960? or will it be same frames regardless but i will not be using the 970 to its fullest if you know what i mean :)
 
I am in not doubt that NVidia and AMD are neck and neck really there are some games that play better on both platforms and at the end of the day we have a choice, if you like NVidia cards then stick with them I have had both and like both.

There is a way to test for bottlenecking I have linked a youtube below that I used a long time ago and often send it to people to follow so you can test to see how your hardware is performing before you part with any cash.

follow this and download afterburner and do some testing with what you have you will be able to see what your cpu and gpu are doing in terms of load and this will give you an idea of whats going on in your system. remember that this is also dependant on the capability of the GPU more memory faster clock speeds etc.

your GPU will work flat out if it can ie your cpu is feeding it enough data to be able to do that but if you follow the above link and do the test this will help you understand bottlenecking a lot better.

i think i understand the term bottlenecking a bit more after watching that vid,,thanks,,so if i get the gtx 970 i will get no worse fps than gtx 960 as i will always get the fps the cpu can handle? is this right? only thing that will happen when i bottleneck is i wont e using the gpu to its fullest?

think im going to get the 970 then :)

also have a play with afterburner now as its easy to use and you can do a before and after test :)

OCUK have a new warranty deal with ASUS GPU's ... its a quick turn around service but it is only a three year warranty compared to the 5 years of the ZOTAC one linked above and the ZOTAC has slightly higher clock speeds.

Make sure you check out the customer reviews and balance up cost and performance the one I linked is a good card but a few people have commented on the fan noise but most cards when you are pushing them will increase in sound level, not sure if you like as silent as possible or not but if you game with a headset like I do then sound isn't an issue at all and you can control the card with Afterburner to keep the fan sound level V's temp at a happy balance.

I'm running a 960 2GB here as a stop gap and tbh, for the price of the thing, i've been left rather impressed.

For the games I play (BF4, Battlefront, CSGO, World of Warships) it happily provides a great gaming experience with my 1080p G-Sync monitor.

Medium settings on the above and it runs at 80fps in most cases.
