Which GPU for 1900x1200 gaming ?

I seen a gainward 4870x2 going for 295 might have to try get hold of one after xmas.

The benchmarks are not convincing though i seen the geforce 280 beat the ati radeon 4870x2 on number of benchmarks surely it cannot be down to drivers as its been out for 4 months.

That price is very good.

I just had a look at the 4850x2 benchies and its a beats at really high res beating the 4870x2 on a number of games.

I'm pretty sure the only games the GTX 280 wins are the ones where Crossfire is not enabled. Even some of the games where Crossfire isn't enabled, the 4870X2 still wins sometimes. When 8xAA is applied, it's a pretty clean sweep for the 4870X2.

512Mb is ok for now in most games upto 1920x1200 - but already games are starting to push that envelope - I know several recent titles use 500+MB of texture memory alone in high/ultra settings and that trend is only going to continue - at the moment you'd prolly just get very occasional slowdown when the card is forced to swap - with the next round or the round after that of games your going to have to start dropping settings to medium to play games that your GPU core is capable of handling at high...

If your serious about gaming at 1920x res then 1gig makes much more sense - even if its not a huge advantage right now.

The benchmarks ive looked at show that the 280 is better at some resolutions than the 4870x2 without crossfire.

Which element of a GFX card adds the most benefit at 1920 x 1200 - memory for textures or GPU power?

i'd say get a 4850. personlly i game at 1920x1200 with a 4850 512mb and all my games performance well with max settings. also farcry 2 runs well with max settings and crysis warhead on gamer setting..

People have short memories when it comes to new gens of cards.

a 4870/GTX260 IS NOT the minimum for 1920x1200, no way at all.

I've ran 1920x1200 with a 2900XT, yeah ok, it was about 2 years ago, but it was plenty fast enough. A 4850 is more than adequate for 1920x1200.

An x1600 can even play some games at 1920x1200, I had the misfortune of having to use one for 3 months as a stop gap, coming from a 3870X2, it wasn't fun to have such a slow card, but I managed to play HL2/DM maxed on it.

A 4870/GTX260 will be great at 1920x1200, but they are not the minimum, you can get away with a 3870,8800GT/GTS,9600GT at that res easily and play most games with high settings.

I'm not saying get one though :p, just be a bit more realistic, because I know when the GTX300 and the HD 58XX come out, people are going to say the same again.

Recently i bought a BFG GTX 280 which turned out to be dead on arival. Second GTX 280, fresh install, latest drivers on Vista 64, Q9650 @ 4GHz. I was not happy with the microstuttering in Crysis, generally not very happy with it at all, so ultimately sent it back and went with my original decision of a 4870X2. Shopped around and got a brand new Sapphire 4870X2 for £340 inc vat & del :D Again fresh install of Vista 64 and latest 8.12 drivers. I have to say i was totally blown away. It was like the good old days of going from a trio32 to a Voodoo 3dfx! Running Crysis V1.2.1 1920X1200 Ultra High on everything, vsync enabled. buttery smooth and simply staggering on my Dell 24"

If you have the PSU for a 4870X2 i'd highly recommend them

I am not sure which card to get lol.

Going to wait until january.

I game at 1024x768 at the moment in feb going to by brand new 20" LCD monitor so i am not sure if to get 4850 1 gig 4870 1 gig or the 4850x2.

I do not want a card that micro stutters oblivion is bad for it i know their is a program out to help but i have heard the right gpu can help eliminate it a lot.

4850 would do fine and run everything well at that res and with a 20" monitor @ 1680x1050 it'll run well.

I like to play games maxed out with 4aa and 16asf fear struggled alittle bit with my 8800gt 512mb as did doom 3 as did oblivion i need a card to max them games out fully and run it well.

Well if you want things maxed out at that res, with most games averaging around 60 fps i'd get a 4870, or gtx 260, a 4850 should be ok too, that should give you at least a year of high quality gaming on the latest titles

I run at the same res and use a GTX280, it's very smooth in the most part with very few dips below 60 even in intensive sections, i also use v sync as i don't like tearing, but even on a 3.6 E8500 and overclocked GTX at 675/1250/1450 there are still sections in games, like COH, Mass Effect etc were you do get small dips

A more powerful card is not really about getting super high framerates, LCD's are 60 FPS refresh so anything above is pretty pointless, the reason to get a powerful card is to keep the framerate consistant even during heavy action sequences, thats the main reason why i bought a 280 not for 150 FPS on some graph, but to hold that framerate steady at around 50/60 when the action really heats up

I just want a card that will not stutter.

My cpu is not great its the pentium dual core e2200 but when i get my artic cooler 7 pro sorted out should get it up to about 3.3 not problems.

I'm on a 8800GT (not sli anymore like my sig) and its still pretty acceptable at 1900x1200 providing you have optimized every part of the OS to give you the best chances. but I'd get a 4870 if you really think you should spend the money.
