I'm posting all over trying to get my plan together but I still need more help :(

Current build
Corsair 500W CX Builder 80 Plus Bronze PSU
AMD FX-4300 3.8GHz Socket AM3+ 8MB
Kingston 240GB SSD
Kingston 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz
Toshiba 1TB
Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 AMD Socket AM3+ Motherboard
MSI HD 7750 2GB

Want to play FFXIV on max settings, try streaming on Twitch and generally have all all round speedy computer.

First part of my plan is to buy a new PSU and GPU on Tuesday. From previous help from you lovely guys I've been told this will be a substantial improvement to what I have now.

I'd like an R9 280/280x, max £200, either Sapphire or Gigabyte as I hear the windforce cooling is very good. Only I don't know the difference between 280, 280x, Dual-X, Vapor-X, Tri-X... it's all straight over my head

Or do I scrap that altogether and find an NVIDIA equivalent?

EDIT TO ADD: It also needs to fit into a Midi Vulcan V2 case :P

R9 290/290X, im sure one can be had in that price range. The TRI-X is a really good cooling solution for them, get very hot with reference models

EDIT** Not sure on size but I remember my 290 been quite long

I've yet to see a 290/290x under £200 otherwise that'd be my decision made lol

So Tri-X is just a cooling thing?

Hmm there was not so long ago (last week if I remember rightly) appear to be around the £230 price now.

Other main competitors are selling the Sapphire TRI-X 290 for £220 (This is a good price) I would get OCUK to price match it and bag that, the cooling is vastly better than reference and it looks bad :) It's quitter as well :)

They are.

OP should measure how much room his case has for a long GPU before buying a 290 or 290X.

So providing it fits, and OCUK can price match me, the Sapphire R9 290 TRI-X will be compatible with what I have now? Run FFXIV on max, and also be compatible with the intel cpu and z97 mobo I plan on buying?

Just checked the 290 power consumption and your PSU will be fine, your mobo has pci-e x16 lane and the rest is all good, assuming your playing at 1080P I can't see why it wouldn't. I would be tempted to overclock the CPU some if your comfortable in doing that.

I'll be buying a new psu regardless I think, I've had mixed responses regarding if it's enough or not, the brand model. Plus I'm going intel which I think is considered more powerful I think I'd rather be on the safe side

Never clocked anything before in my life so not sure I'd fancy starting on these new bits lol

Yup 1080p, so as long asthe z97 I buy has a pci-e x16 lane too I'm good

Sure will mate :)

Really easy bud, lots of good overclocking material on this site, take it nice and steady and it can be very rewarding and really fun at the same time.

Superflower are really good if you're in the market for a PSU

Nice, looking forward to this now :D

Don't want to turn it into a psu thread but I'm thinking an Antec VPF 650w seen one for £58.66

The 290 (an MSI iirc) has definitely hit a penny under 200 sheets before, but not the tri-x. I think 220 is about as low as that one has gone and it'll be a pretty big jump over the 280x for 10pc over your budget. Assuming it fits as mentioned above.

I'd heard bad things about the MSI brand one so wanted to steer clear of that. Which is a shame as I like MSI

To buy on Tuesday:

Antec 650w PSU
Sapphire Radeon R9 290 TRI-X

Then save for:
Intel i5-4690k
Gigabyte Z97X-SLI

Is it overkill?

Really good system and will run the majority of games on 1080P maxed out if not all games!

Just remember to google the graphics card, copy the main competitor and link it back to OCUK in either CS/Phone call, they will be able to match/beat the price :)

I apologise for doing this as it sometimes infuriates me when people recommend cards well over budget. The 290 tri x is a very well received card, but the nvidia 780ti is a noticeable jump in performance again. At 250 i think it's the lowest it's ever been. If you have any elasticity in your budget and won't upgrade for some time, see what you can do to get the 780ti. Check out anandtech's gpu comparisons to see how it fares vs the 290 tri x and see if you think it's worth the extra. Again based on case dimensions, something I lack knowledge of.

Mulps - I didn't expect to be upgrading so soon anyway, my build is only 2 years old but unfortunately my wants/needs with a build have changed and it's just not enough. I value and welcome your opinion though, however I'm already stretching an extra £20 for the 290 tri-x (if it fits!) so another £30 just isn't possible but thank you though :) thank you everyone :)
