HI ,

At the moment I have a asus 6950 2GB its a triple slot card...

nice and quite only problem takes up three slots ...

I am thinking of going CF by finding another 6950 hopefully my sound card will still fit too :D

But if you had the choice to play games at 2560 x 1440 res

Would you go CF

or sell and get

7970 3GB
Or 680 GTX 2GB
or new 770GTX ...

whats the advice out there please and why ...

aiming to play games like BF3 at ultra or high settings thank you

well my 690 seems to be around 50-60% usage in BF3 at 1440p 60hz everything on max.

so one 680/7970/770 should be fine. and you can always add another later if its not quite up to it. guess it depends how cheap you can get another 6950 for. im also not up on how good that card actually is, so im sure someone else will chip in ;)

Sell the 6950 and get either 1x7970 or 2x7950, depending on how much you want to spend. AMD get around 100% scaling (give or take) in bf3 so you can't go wrong really.

With one 7970 you will be able to play 1440p Ultra without AA. If you overclock it heavily you should be good for x2 AA.

With two 7950's you will be able to run full ultra 1440p with very high fps at stock clock speed. If you overclock the cards a bit then you will see fps around 90-150+ with everything maxed at 1440p.

Really? My overclocked 7950s rarely see 150fps in BF3 ultra with AA even at 1080p.

Still a good choice, just thing you have overegged the performance a touch.

Depends whether its single player or multi, metro or firestorm. I covered all bases with my post there. I will be doing some benchmarks similar to what i did here soon so make sure you check those out. ;)

I dont think he wants to crossfire a new gpu only his old one. I have no comment on the 6950 crossfire but you could look up some bench marks on it?

Any of the cards you mentioned would be good at 1440 res and it all depends on what card you like the look of better, but if we are saying a standard no frills gpu then the GTX 770 is the best way to go, newer product and all.

Hi thanks for the reply's ...

How much better does AA on look ......I don't play at 1080p hence the GPU upgrade...

so CF 7950 will beat a 7790 and 680GTX is that correct......

What about the issues like micro stutter on CF has that been solved ...

I don't want to spend crazy amount on GPU cos they never hold value like my 295GTX I bought LOL .....but now running a 6950 2GB

also would a 3GB card be better then a 2GB card Vram

You need don't as much AA at 1440p to get a smooth image, generally x2 or x4 is more than enough at this res. Battlefield 3 runs great on x4 though.

Stock 7950 crossfire will comfortably beat any single card solution.

Microstutter does occur on some games, for the majority its smooth sailing though. However 99% of all microstutter can be removed permanently by using radeonpro and changing the flip queue size to 1. If it still remains which is unlikely except in a few extreme cases, then it can be solved by using vsync and or a frame limit cap. This is easily done and will take 30 seconds to set up for any game that suffers from it. If you don't want to do this then multi gpu might not be for you.

AMD have some new drivers coming soon which mean the above steps might not be necessary any more if microstutter occurs, they should be released any day now.

A 3gb card would be more future proof than a 2gb card. Although 2gb is enough at the moment that could change in the not too distant future with consoles having up to 8gb of memory to use. (shared system and video memory)

thanks for the info was gonna go and get a 680GTX but you recommendation seems to be two 7950 CF any decent deals going .......at moment ...for them any where ....

there was a misprice on amazon but they did not honour the misprice:D

If your after 2 cards and you can find a good deal, dont forget a 770 or 670 or 680 sli performs faster than 7950's if you can find them as cheap there a good deal.

This is a pretty good price tbh. Sell the games and you're looking at titan beating performance for £375. :)

Thanks but I dont think that card comes with games .....will that really be titan performance as they lkke 800 plus gpus :D

It comes with three free games, easily worth £25-£30. Get two cards, get six games.

Give the 7950's a small overclock and you will be in 7970 ghz crossfire territory. How does that compare to a gpu costing three times as much? Follow this link and all will be revealed. ;)

I didn't include delivery but £217x2 =£434. Sell the 6 games for £60 =£374 (quite possible you will get more but lets call it £60)

I will be putting up some proper benchmarks soon but snapped a quick screenshot from Metro, 1440p Ultra x4 AA 2x7950's @1093/1563. I can't imagine dropping below 120fps at 1080p tbh.

MSI are fine as a brand. The good thing about their cards is they come with a three year warranty.
