Which GPU (or GPU's) for 4k?

Current setup:

4770k
EVGA GTX 780 Superclocked
Corsair HX750W

I am considering going to a 4gb 290x. Or should I crossfire two lower cards?

Bit worried about my PSU, as I have 8 hdd's connected so two gpu's probably isn't viable

Thanks

No single top end card (unless you count 295x2 and Titan Z) are capable of driving 4K without dropping the setting way, way down to get playable frame-rates.

As a bare minimum I would be looking at a couple of 290, 290X's or 780, 780Ti's. A couple of Titan Blacks would arguably be the best option, due to the 6gb VRAM, but for the price of 2 of them, you could get 3 290X's or 4 290's.

4k is an expensive waste of time atm, wait for Maxwell before going 4k. Also wait for an IPS 4k monitor instead of an Inferior TN panel.

I'm waiting until an IPS 4K 60hz screen becomes available before jumping on 4K, hopefully around the same time when beefier GPU's start to appear..

1440P IPS 60hz is ok for now.

1440P IPS 120hz would be outstanding! The only thing close on the horizon (from what I can gather) is the Asus ROG Swift, but given it is a 3D Vision, G-Sync monitor, I wouldn't be willing to pay the premium given my current set-up.

Seems rare these days to find a piece of tech that ticks all the boxes, without having to compromise on certain stuff. :(

Well I find it awesome and even 1 card could cope well with 4K. As for inferior TN panel LMAO.... Have you seen them?

Ohhhh and welcome back v3teran :)

You can get 120hz IPS at 1440p, its called a Catleap and a Tempest Overlord which is what i have.

Yes i have seen them, there is no way i would buy one over a 1440p 120hz IPS.

Who is V3teran?

Thanks for the info. I was unaware these even existed. I may look in to 1 of those. Reasonably happy still playing at the peasants resolution 1080p @120hz, but always interested in something a little better and a new toy!

Well I have compared a 120Hz 1080P high end Asus and a 1440P High end Dell IPS to the Samsung and couldn't go back to a lower resolution. I appreciate you like what you use but to dismiss the Samsung for being a TN panel is very harsh. Read my review and Linus also has a review and picks up on the same good and bad points as me.

As for the V3teran bit ;)

If im totally honest with you the difference between a TN and IPS are minimal apart from viewing angles which is pointless anyhow as how plays games from the side, nobody. However i just think that if your going for a 4k then it needs to be IPS and 120hz for me. Playing games at 60hz and 120hz is like a slideshow in difference. Even if 4k monitors were 120hz and IPS right now, we do not have the GPU power available for a fair price. Its ludicrously expensive for even an enthusiast, if 4k is going to take off in gaming then GPU's need to be more powerful than what we have on offer right now and a fair price.

Im not with you on V3teran, dont know what you mean.

So you still have a 690 and run on a X58 board? If so, that would be pointless for 4K but as you say you have ordered 3x Titan black, you will have the grunt to run 4K.

Two or three way 780 / Titan /290X at least.

Ideal world - Quad SLi Titan Black

Got a fair budget - Tri SLi 780Ti/ 290X

Looking to scrimp it - SLi / 780 / 290

Best bet money wise and for future proofing VRAM would be attempting to pick up a couple second hand Titans.

I have a Rampage 4 Extreme fully watercooled with 4930k running at 5ghz Ht-on 24/7 in a 900D case with the finest watercooling components that money can buy, the best!

Like i said though 4k is expensive and not worth it atm if you want good framerates.
What are good framerates? 20, 60, 100,??
Depends on the person, to me id want 4k at 120h IPS standard cause im running that standard now at 1440p. 60hz compared 120hz is like a slideshow, even moving around windows lol. Even 100hz is loads better than 60hz slideshow.
Not only that but the 4k displays now are crap compared to what will be out in 12 months or more.

4k at 120hz will need some serious Power for a constant 120fps in all games. We dont really have that power at a fair price but we will do when Maxwell surfaces.

Yeah ok

Anyway on the monitor front, you are saying that you would prefer a 60hz 1440p IPS monitor that hopefully overclocks to 120hz with a single years warranty that you would have to send it back to Korea for nearly £400 rather than a 4K 60hz monitor with 2 or 3 years warranty that is on site for £500.
Well its your choice I suppose, but after reading about Gregsters own use I know what I would want. Alas my single 670 wouldn't really drive either too well.

And 4K is far from "Crap" as you put it and a few of us are pleased as punch with it. You can run SGAASSAA on it as well ;)

You are likely to be waiting an extremely long time for 120hz 4k displays (at remotely reasonable prices anyway). Re: 120hz 1440p panels, are you overclocking this yourself? If so, hardly a solution of any value given it may clap out at any time. 60hz is not a slide show, that is pure exaggeration even if 120hz is preferred in fps games. From what I've seen of 4k displays, I don't see what's not to like frankly.

As Gregster says, I've also got a 1440p Ips as well as a Samsung 4k and the sammie blows the Ips out of the water in most respects and draws level in most others, the only thing is that the viewing angles are marginally less on the 4k, but as I sit straight on when using my computer it is a non issue for me

Hardware wise, a pair of 780's will be fine, as you dont need large amounts of AA with 4K

4930 at 5ghz 24/7

I would like to know your BIOS settings if you don't mind :) All sounds like a weak chatup line if you ask me ;)
